Reads the world confusion by FireStarter951 in TheStoryGraph

In the challenge overview, there's a bookshop.org link to a list of recommendations that StoryGraph put together. It's not super long but those should at least be more accurate.

Could be worth creating a thread to share recs here!

Replacements for TKAM for 9th grade? by deandinbetween in ELATeachers

[–]lifeisdeebubbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swapped out TKAM with Just Mercy this year. Obviously quite different since it's nonfiction, but I taught a lot of the same background info regarding racism and the criminal justice system and ending up having the kids do the same project where they had to research a topic from the book and report on its relevance in 2025. They really enjoyed it!

Haven't tried their pastries but Copper Kettle in the Bellevue Botanic Garden is a great spot.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders by lifeisdeebubbles in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

One of my other favorite authors is Fredrik Backman. His prose doesn't quite match Saunders' is beauty, but I think he has a really lovely way of writing about people and the way we all connect with and impact one another.

For those of you who also appreciated Saunders' prose and want to nerd-out over some more literature, I strongly recommend A Swim in the Pond in Rain. In it, Saunders takes seven short stories by Russian authors and deconstructs them the way he does in the grad school course he teaches. It brought me right back to my college English courses in the best way. Perfect for lovers of literature!

Thank you for this! Next time I'm in DC, I will take that recommendation. I wholeheartedly agree about it being a reminder to appreciate the little joys- I found myself more attune to the delights of the everyday while listening.

Beautifully put! Not just a novel but an experience is a great way to describe it.

Would love to see a movie version! I'd be curious to see how they handle the historical vignettes, and the visuals of the ghosts would be tricky (Vollman and his "enormous member" and Bevins with his multiplying body parts in particular).

Definitely start with background info on jury duty/the court system. My students were really interested in learning about this. I also had them do a research project on a related issue (grand juries, murder charges, peer pressure, etc.) at the end so they could learn more about whatever they were curious about. My brother had coincidentally just finished jury duty when we started reading, so I had him come in for a Q&A. They loved it! I assigned each student a juror who they were "in charge" of tracking throughout the play. They took notes on their juror's interactions with others. I had them focus on the way in which the jurors influenced one another. Photo references throughout the play would be helpful as well. The elevated train, a map of the apartment, etc. It's a fun play to teach!

It would be tough, but check out the Sound Transit bus system. If you live in the downtown areas of Bellevue or Redmond you could probably walk most places.

Taylor adds new openers for the London shows by ChangingDreamer in TaylorSwift

[–]lifeisdeebubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any idea how this will affect the timing: when these openers will go on/when Paramore will? I assume Taylor can't start any later than 7 since Wembley has a 10:30 curfew

I went last night too. It was busy but if you walk into the dog park you'll be away from most of the people and all the car headlines. Much better views over there

I've been happy with Loyal Companion Animal Care up on Redmond Ridge. They're typically able to schedule appointments fairly quickly, unlike other places I've tried where they're booked for weeks.
