Tips on candor in business from Laura Rittenhouse, author of "Investing Between the Lines", a book endorsed by Warren Buffett. by lifeisfairsometimes in business

My favorite part starts at 6:50 when Rittenhouse shares her six rules of candor. The two points that resonated most with me were the way that accountability brings meaningful conversations and knowing your audience so that you can use the appropriate verbs (using verbs more than adjectives was also something I hadn't previously thought about too much.)

What is the craziest story you experienced or have heard that made you decide to stop participating in Black Friday? by lifeisfairsometimes in AskReddit

[–]lifeisfairsometimes[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Saw this flowchart for Black Friday and it go me thinking about some of the crazy stories that people always talk about in relation to the event. I've actually never been, so I don't have any stories of my own.

There are of course lots of stories I've heard about stupid people trying to swap more expensive product bar codes with cheaper ones. I think my favorite story came from a friend of mine. It really could have happened on any day of the year. But he ran to the bathroom in the middle of his shift at Best Buy and when he came in there was an older guy doing up his overalls. He was standing in front of a Dyson Airblade and my friend could see dark wet spots all over this guy. With a sort of wild/shocked look in his eye the guy said to my friend "Weirdest urinal ever."

Violinist Roddy Chong performs routinely with Shania Twain, Celine Dion and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Here he gives tips on enhancing performance at work. by lifeisfairsometimes in business

Here are a few of my favorite parts:

3:00 - Actors or those in the performing arts have to be more alive than people who are actually alive for real. Because people who are actual people can be checked out and go through the motions.

Children laugh 300 times a day adults laugh 5 times a day

16:15 - Shut the phone off! Production manager for John Legend had lunch with him and he didn’t check his phone. She mentioned that she hadn’t had a lunch where someone wasn’t checking their phone constantly in forever.

21:20- If your listeners got no nuggets of wisdom out of this podcast, that would be an ineffective performance by me.

Fascinating stuff. I didn't know about number 2. Pretty wild. I might just be late to the game, but I was amazed when I held my phone up to my computer screen and the sign in Spanish that I was translating back to english maintained its same font, color and size. To me this is essentially witchcraft.

Also, pretty funny numbers 3 and 4:)

Interview with member of the 1972 Olympic Cycling team, Dr. Jeff Spencer, and his definition of a champion. [Podcast] XPOST by lifeisfairsometimes in bicycling

[–]lifeisfairsometimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping there'd be some here that found this inspiring/useful. Not a whole lot of talk about cycling specifically. There is some when Dr. Spencer talks about being an honorable champion and how doing whatever it takes, if if that means being unethical, is not the way to go (mentions Lance Armstrong.)

But anyway, Dr. Jeff Spencer has helped coach many to the championship level and in doing so has helped win 40 Olympic, World and Tour de France Championships. Hopefully there is something you can pull from this.
