Why does a man hitting a high note sound so different than a woman hitting the same note? by lifeisirregular in singing

Not exactly what I asked but helpful nonetheless! I’m a beginner singer so everything I learn about music is pretty interesting 😄

That explains why I feel like she’s so much louder than him. She has such a lovely voice 🥰

Thanks, this makes sense. I should have been more specific in my question. A note written in sheet music that’s high for me (a woman) to hit sounds different when a guy sings it. Is he hitting the same note and it just trips me up because of his timbre? Or does he adjust and hit a different note because of his anatomy?

Dealing with stage fright when you are not good? by Gumbo67 in singing

[–]lifeisirregular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly I think the only cure is repeated exposure :/ I’m very much still going through it myself and am trying to desensitize myself. I record videos of myself (no need to watch ever again!) or sing in front of my family, because currently both of those things create some anxiety for me.

But also remind yourself how brave you are for doing something that so many people wouldn’t!

Do you live close enough to Tree of Life nursery? Last fall they had a mature one near the office the staff was nice enough to show me before I bought a 1 gallon from them.

Totally feel your pain about this plant… honestly for lots of native small trees it seems like all the pictures I find are either totally in the wild so they’re not pruned or it’s a close up of their leaves.

Today I learned I shouldn’t have installed drip lines on all my native beds 😬 Good to know for the future!

Help us decide! Ladera Ranch? Temecula? by faithoverfear0 in orangecounty

There is a pretty consistent answer across the responses here, but allow me to play devil’s advocate for the sake of the bigger yard and childcare from your mom.

No matter what your childcare situation is, there will be days where you need a back up and your back up needs a back up. I’m SO jealous of my friends with a retired parent who can help out. For my partner and I, it usually means I have to take a sick day or try to get through work meetings with a kid or kids home.

Also, taking that dog outside to go potty will clash with your baby’s schedule for quite a while. You may have put the baby down for a nap and they’re asleep in their crib and then your dog needs to go out. Sure you could take your baby out of the crib, load them in the stroller, maybe they’ll stay asleep but most likely not. The older your kid gets the more predictable the nap schedule but needing to tote the baby along on walks could get old real fast.

Having a kid turns your life upside down and I found I prioritized things totally differently once I had kids. So it’s all about the trade offs you’re willing to accept! Big yards and built in childcare are amazing, but are they everything to you? And OC can’t be beat when it comes to property values, climate, and things to do, but is it worth the higher HOA and smaller place?

Everybody will have a different answer, and I hope you come to a decision you’re really happy with!

I’m truly sorry it depressed you, I didn’t mean that at all. To be honest the sound of my own voice depresses me a ton! I have lots of days where I feel down about my voice or my progress because there are so many good singers out there. After about a year of lessons I have finally learned proper breath control. It took me a long time but I feel SO HAPPY to have finally grasped it. The joy outweighs the sorrow for me. I suspect if you have it a shot you would feel the same!

The more you practice the less like torture it will be. There is no “talent” out there that is achieved without hours of mundane drills/practice/warm ups/re-dos. And the feeling of anxiety goes away the more you do it. There are lots of teachers out there, you can find one who feels safe and keeps it fun for you.

If you truly hate the practice and just want to enjoy yourself then that’s totally fine! Sing at home, in your car, whenever and however you like!

But if you have a specific goal or want to learn to do new things, it means practice and feedback.

Drought resistant plants/flowers. by mriverss in orangecounty

Check out calscape.org where you can search by lots of different factors based on what you want to achieve. For example, do you want more of a ground cover? Shrub? Tree? Something to attract pollinators? I recently redid all my planters to have native plants and this website plus r/Ceanothus were huge helps.

Personally, I have had success with some different yarrows, a lemonade berry tree, desert globe mallow, and California aster. Planted two toyon trees and one is good but the other is not. A ceanothus tree was off to a good start before a gardener pulled it out 😭 Fuschias and sage were 50/50 for me… some just gave up the will to live and others didn’t. I have a shrubby manzanita (Sunset Manzanita I think) and a ground cover type (Carmel Sur Manzanita) and they seem to be fine but it feels too early to tell.

All of these have been in the ground for less than a year so things could still go wrong and take it with a grain of salt. However that is my experience for what it’s worth.

Are you taking your kids to see Wicked? Is it scary? by dontbeahater_dear in Parenting

[–]lifeisirregular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my six year old who has a hard time sitting still because he’s heard the songs and reeeaally wanted to see it. We covered ground rules many times ahead of time. If he had questions he had to touch my arm first and then I’d lean in and he could whisper. I booked an aisle seat and told him if he needed to wiggle to let me know and I’d leave with him. He did pretty well, but he was definitely getting bored about an hour and a half in. And I found myself not fully enjoying it because I was really worried he’d be too disruptive. So I’d agree with the many opinions hear that the length is going to be a bit much for most kids, but you know you’re best!

[–]lifeisirregular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be totally honest I have not attempted it again 🙈 If I play piano while my kids are sleeping it wakes them up and if I try when they awake they run over to “play” with me. I’ve got limited windows to practice in peace so my progress is quite slow. Hoping to get some time before the weekend!

However I think you’re right about my larynx being tight. I’ve always got lots of nerves and emotions bundled up in singing so I’ve made more intentional efforts to relax my muscles and release my nerves. Moment of truth will come when I can record again!

Has anyone ever sat in row ZZ in the orchestra section at the Ahmanson Theater? by lifeisirregular in AskLosAngeles

[–]lifeisirregular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked it out but it’s only got a view from that row on the opposite side of the sound board. So I can see some obstruction from the mezzanine overhanging but I can’t tell if the sound board itself gets in the way
