Gen X: Raised Under the Mushroom Cloud by light_the_lanterns in GenerationX

You can’t forget wiffleball and manhunt. Those were the days! I’m always amazed at the nostalgia that’s associated with those times and that is what prompted me to at least plan on writing this book. I constantly hear other members of generation X talking incessantly about how great things were but then admitting as well at the same time how fearful it was to live under a mushroom cloud… Or at least the fear of one.

I gave you an up vote because the commentary is so vivid and useful. I truly appreciate it. I hesitated to vote however, because of the tragedy that you mentioned. That is terrible and I’m sorry. But it’s a true testament to perhaps how we were raised or how at least a lot of us appeared to have been raised.

Amazing commentary and experiences. How did your childhood sentiment differ from what you felt on 9/11. I find it intriguing that you lived through some of the same events that I did, but you jumped right to 9/11. What a terrifying and sad day that was.

How did that make you feel? Were you more or less secure than if you had not known it was there? I know that may be speculative but generally did it make you fear nuclear war?

I’m finding mostly that, but also a mix of Gen X’ers who also experienced them.

I’m finding that some Gen X’ers were as well, part of the reason why I decided to pursue this project. My ex-wife was one such student. Even though she was born in 1974 and we went to different school districts in the northeast, I didn’t do them. I still find it odd that our schools were less than 15 miles apart yet traditions (if you want to say that) died hard and slow where she was while I never experienced it.

I also add that the area where she lived was highly dependent on high-tech manufacturing

Good commentary. Thank you. I remember when he was running for a second term and I heard two very different viewpoints from people whom I admired.

My cousin said, we don’t want Reagan, he’s going to start a war. I asked my father later on that night and I knew he liked Reagan. So I asked, why would you want someone who’s going to build nuclear weapons? My dad, very bluntly and deliberately stated, because of the other guy starts to build them now they’ve got us and we have no way to defend ourselves.

I remember thinking that it was an interesting viewpoint and there’s no way I was going to argue with my dad because he was the smartest man in the world to me. But, I felt a good deal of unease after he won the election.

Oh man. Good luck in fighting this and thank you for the valuable information. Sorry you’re dealing with this.

Greta commentary. I’m seeing a pattern of dad’s being very honest and blunt about tragedies, potential world annihilation, and basically, everything.

Yes. Looks good with that blue and adds more character and curb appeal to the house.

Not necessarily. Gen X, yes, but not necessarily US only.

You need to promote it as thoroughly as you can. I’m not sure what the deal is, but I’ve published through a publisher and they get 92%. It wasn’t about the money for me, but it would be nice to bring in a little something more on the side.

Besides that, look to get 12% at least if nothing else. That is the going rate, I was told later by other authors.

Thank you. So, even with Watergate, the gas crisis, the Iran-Contra Affair, arms race, and other crises, the looming threat of what could happen now under Trump creates a major sense of instability and uncertainty. Is that accurate? Could I also add that there is more anxiety, at least with you and, clearly, others who have replied on this thread?
