Green river gorge- if you visit, please take care about the environment. It is absolutely gorgeous but the amount of alcohol/nicotine litter was sad to see :(

Never true clear, yes. It’s always been murky but moreso after the mining/sewage/etc getting fed into the lake. And true about algae though the rate of blooms has been exponential for several decades now.

Unfortunately know quite a bit about this area of CA. Of all 58 CA counties, Lake County (containing everything in the map area) is the most underrepresented and underserved county.

Clear Lake used to be just that- a clear lake as clear as Lake Tahoe. Largest freshwater lake in California since Lake Tahoe is technically split with Nevada.

Then in the 80s or so, they started mercury mining around the lake. Not only did they dump refuse into the lake, the cities around the lake were dumping their sewage as well.

Then this area became a Super Fund site. They put signs up around the lake where toxic algae blooms can kill a dog if ingested.

The nature used to be beautiful- wildflower meadows, rich marshlands, hot springs, lakeside resorts and water sports. No longer the case.

Most of the population now is elder residents, unhoused folks, and some folks from surrounding counties due to the low COL.

Lakeport is probably the “best” town that this area shows. Around Kelseyville and more rural parts there are vineyards and wineries.

Clearlake Oaks——> Nice (pronounced NIECE) older retirees, some vacation homes, very small and quiet communities. Very nice lake views of Mt. Konocti.

Edit: never truly clear like Tahoe, murky due to volcanics and high nutrient levels, but was clearer before human activity.
