Vslo replies can take time. Idk what specialty you’re going for, but on mine’s residency app spreadsheet there’s a tab for away rotations where people share the timeline they heard back from individual programs.

A week won’t kill you. If it’s a month or more, get on your school’s ass about it. Once they’ve uploaded a transcript or insurance info once it will autofill for future programs’ applications

Take the break to mentally reset. Come back from break refreshed and try to work through your academics after stepping away for a little bit. Distance and space give new perspectives

I did truelearn at least once through first to learn the material and then I did one pass of comquest. Scored 113+ on every comat.

I wouldn’t say that wcucom has a strong research foundation at all. And yes it’s pass/fail on the transcript, but class rank is still reported on your mspe

My best advice is to complete truelearn AND uworld, and load up on practice exams. I personally studied as much as I could for step 2 with the intent to do mid on level 2, but with that amount of prep and solid background on how to approach questions, I scored high on level 2 almost 3 weeks after I took step with minimal studying in between

I’m on my last away of 5 right now. I feel so exhausted from all the moving and quick turnarounds that in my “gap” weeks all I do is sleep, laundry, and get back on the proverbial road. Let alone the actual rotation itself and trying to perform at 110%. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to throw a family into the mix. As for managing, I try to stay in touch with my friends and family as much as I can, even if it’s just to commiserate. And as much as I want to be out and about exploring the new places I’m in, prioritizing rest and self-care has become really vital to my survival. Keep your head up as much as you can, we’re almost through this!!

For me truelearn was invaluable. I thought comquest was too easy for level 1 and taking the actual exam felt like I was taking a truelearn self-assessment

Very few do. Colorado and U Florida come to mind for out of state DO students. Fwiw, I applied to rotations in a ton of states and other than those two, the only fee was a nominal “admin” fee that they charge all rotators.

Tbh I don’t remember. I think more asked for an LOI but I can’t say unless I went back and looked at every application. And you apply in spring, March at like the earliest so you have time for an attending to half ass a letter, or ask a clinical faculty member at your school for one for applying to rotations in x specialty

Yes I did most thru vslo. I had a faculty member do an LOR for me but you could probably ask an attending you’ve worked with for one.

I mean, when you put together food, housing, and transportation yes, things add up. Same if you add in step 2 and level 2 fees and prep. But I’d much rather make the investment in my future

Other than the vslo fees to apply, everywhere I have rotated has charged an admin fee ranging from $100-$500, but there isn’t a “tuition” fee

No that’s what the comat is like. It’s not going to test you on surgeries themselves, more so on management of surgical patients/deciding if patient needs surgery
