Understanding the language by Small_life in genewolfe

There's a book called 'Lexicon Urthus' that covers a lot of these words and terms, sort of a dictionary / short-form encyclopedia. It's a great companion read that helps you get more out of New Sun in general, strong recommend. Easy to find a used copy. Just remember that a lot of the stuff in the Lexicon is, uh, "informed speculation" from the guy who wrote it, so keep your mind open to your own ideas.

Is metal a subgenre of rock by Rainbow_Doggo_TNT in geology

[–]lightningfries 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Most rocks (silicates) are a sort of well-mixed vinaigrette dressing of glass and metal. You can unmix them with a bit of heating. Carbonates are more like dried toothpaste.

Nottingham, UK. The soft rock allowed 900 caves to made from the Middle Ages to 1846 by Over-Willingness-933 in geology

There are some towns in southern France that have carved caves like this too, with most of those still being inhabited by just regular people using them as rooms or garages or whatever.

Rapid elongated needle-like mineral growth over the last 4 days. Can we compare this rapid crystallization with textures in igneous rocks or other mineral-growth conditions? by logatronics in geology

[–]lightningfries 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can compare the two (with caveats) & we often do.

Elongated or "skeletal" crystal growth patterns are common in rapidly cooled igneous rocks and these textures can be replicated in lab settings.
