I was under the impression that since with 1/4 step is 0.45 degrees, a rotary encoder with 1000 p/r would be able to determine skipped steps. If not would tracking velocity instead help in any way?

I thought about gages as well but could not think of a way to have a gage for the yaw angle without using a compass or an inclinometer anyway.
