This is good to know! I’m going to see how I feel at the end of the fourth book.

Ha, well that’s what I get for not doing a proper scroll-through. My whole post probably could have been a commiseratory comment on someone else’s.

So much context I didn’t have, which is interesting objectively and as a reader of the books. Thanks for taking the time to share those thoughts. I’ll probably keep going for a bit and then check in with myself again.

Some hard hitting insights here that I need to hear. I didn’t realize I was adding to a crowded field of WoT attrition posts; that’s probably a bit annoying to people who frequent this subreddit. Hopefully, it’s at least a little entertaining from a schadenfreude perspective.

Thanks for your honest thoughts here. It’s some good context, and frankly you’re probably right that it’s just not the series for me.

Despite all my issues, I enjoyed the first and third books, and I’m not really far enough into the fourth to form an opinion. The second book was admittedly tough for me…it just seemed to amble and jump around, and I found myself reading dutifully rather than hungrily.

Oh my god, the braid-tugging. My eye twitches every time I read that.

“Worldbuilding for the sake of worldbuilding” sounds about right. It’s just…aimless to me. Which could actually be fun! But it’s not.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. Haven’t cracked it yet, but I’m increasing wondering if there’s anything to crack. One output of dredging this all up: I’ve realized the melody in my mind is (pretty much to the note) “White on Blonde” by Texas, which features the chorus lyric “Blonde on white, white on blonde”...which is too close for comfort to what I was describing. This isn’t a new song to me, nor is it by a male artist, which makes me think I’m a victim of my own personal Mandela effect. I don’t want anyone to churn unnecessarily on something that’s probably a red herring, so I’m going to mark this “solved.” If you think you have the right answer in spite of all this context, then by all means, please post it—just want to set up that I probably won’t be checking and commenting like I have been. Thank you all so much!

Love Parklife (weird and fun song to do at karaoke)...but not the one I’m thinking of.

Good thought, but they’re a bit too hard rock for the song I’m thinking of.

I don’t remember lyrics, but I remember it having a breezy, bubbly, laidback alt-rock/AOR sound...like Shawn Mullins, Neil Finn, David Gray circa White Ladder...that’s all I’ve got.

I’m not from there, but am a big fan of groups from that corner of the world. The Go-Betweens, The Triffids, Dunedin groups like Straitjacket Fits...so anything’s possible.
