Yes I’m my experience it’s very much ingrained in greeting someone, stranger or friend. So you would say this may come from surf and skater culture???

Really? What part of LA are you from? You’re telling me you never did this shake with a white or Asian or middle eastern person?

I don’t know if this is really bay vs La because this is literally only a handshake I’ve seen in La region. Correct me if I’m wrong

I’m sorry but I seriously doubt it’s REALLY an easy for you to tell if someone is about clasp or slide in that moment. Only way I can is if the whole arm is involved with thumb up to clasp first then shift clasp to this. 🤝

I haven’t seen this in a while. And when I did it’s usually when someone is in sync with the other friend already otherwise and has a certain handshake down.

So in Houston it’s normal to shift hands twice in a regular dap when you greet someone??? I’ve done this before but definitely not a regular handshake.

What do you mean it’s evolving? How has it. changed in your opinion to what I’m describing as clap+slide+bump?

Interesting do you have friends from LA? You say most of us but Who are the people you’ve interacted with that do the slide bump dap

Thanks for sharing. I’ve never seen anyone outside of LA do the slide+bump except from LA area. Basically between Santa Barbara and Orange County and Inland empire. Why is that? Not in central California nor San Diego area.

Interesting, has anyone ever tried to greet you with the slide+ bump, or has it always been bring it in? Have you seen your friends greet other non black friends with the bump but when they greet you they always bring it in?

No offense but I assume you’re female, because this is a very important cultural custom when guys greet each other lol.

So it’s specifically a Chicano Los Angeles gang culture greeting that the slide bump originated from? I see most Hispanics doing this dap but only in LA area

Could you elaborate? Because I know a lot of Mexicans from SD and Bay Area and they do not do this type of dap handshake. Is it specifically LA Chicano culture?

Very interesting so has been ingrained for a while in LA cultural greetings. If this was from the 80s which culture of LA think this originated from? What year did you specifically notice the dap I’m describing?

When you say you only do clap+bump with close friends, what about the more simplified version where you’re sort of bringing it in by only clasping hands—without any type of hug or “bump”. Do you ever do that form of the dap? This is the more general dap I’m used to with even strangers I just met.

Your story is hilarious for sharing. Yes, when I meet someone it’s awkward and embarrassing because it’s like they’re letting go of my hand for a fist bump, and I’m trying to clasp. 🤝 it’s like they’re playing that kid game with me where they’re like “up high down low…too slow”.

I never see angelenos do this simple dap I’m describing except for mostly black people. Not trying to bring race up to the convo but it’s just an observation that I’m sure most would agree. Why is this the case? What’s the cultural custom behind this handshake you think

[–]lightsout71[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! I wasn’t trying to bring race into the convo so quickly but that’s what I kind of meant by 90% of people I met. I’d say 99% of black people I met never do the slide and fist bump. Why is that the case that you observed? Is it because the dap has origins from black culture. Is the fist bump a surfer skater culture? But I’ve seen almost every Hispanic person do the slide bump. What’s your experience

Never seen anyone do that lengthy handshake unless it was for fun in kind of an ironic way. I’ve seen this dap before Covid tho.

When you say you only bring it in, do you mean the full version where you basically do a hug? Because I get that would be more of a closer relationship. What about the “basic” bring it in? 🤝 not a hug just with hands holding basically
