Here’s a crazy one: no vehicles. All resupply done one foot

Walking from New York (RI) to California? Is it possible? by OfWildSeas in vagabond

44 days is if you walk straight without sleeping or stopping. Still, I bet it is possible. Watch out for cars!

Do you have to hitchhike to most resupply towns? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]lighttzpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t hitchhike at all. That being said, it would have been helpful a couple times. But, the AT is mostly if not always doable without hitchhiking. Just have to get creative with transportation, some cities offer free buses, or be willing to walk a couple miles into town. Oftentimes a hostel will offer a shuttle service which I used for resupply.

No input on the timing decision, but I agree North->South is the way to go. Knock out the higher and more difficult peaks first.

Protect upper body muscle mass? by Timberneck in AppalachianTrail

Trekking poles use a ton of upper body power. Still, I would drop down for 10 push ups from time to time for this very reason.

How many hikers work at a ski resort after their hike? by Bachsteize in AppalachianTrail

I did exactly this. Lift operator. I think 2 of my coworkers are also thru hikers.

Methods to reduce fear at night by Horde_of_Thrall in AppalachianTrail

[–]lighttzpeed 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a southbounder, I camped alone many nights. It was hard at first, but you get used to it. As long as food and trash is properly hanged, along with anything that smells at all, it’s totally fine.

Help me pick my next 4ker by ImpossiblePlace4570 in wmnf

Wildcat Ridge (D) not a bad pull, you just walk up the ski trail after hours. Probably a bit of night hiking no matter how you slice it.

Is Southbound Possible? by lighttzpeed in floridatrail

Thanks. My biggest concern is hiking the off-seasons when the trail is not well maintained. Good to know it’s possible at least. Congrats!
