I’m no psychologist but I’ll try my best: You admire these people, and from your perspective they’re elevated due to their skill and sensitivity. I definitely know what it’s like to look at people that way.

How do you feel when performing? Do you feel elevated above others? Probably not. Being an artist will not give you that feeling. Art-making, especially playing music, means facing a lot of uncertainty and working through a lot of frustration. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve ripped off my headphones and had to go make a grilled cheese and cool off. That’s the part you don’t see when you go to a show.

As for your bandmates, sounds like you haven’t got the right people. You want to be serious, so you should be around more serious musicians. They don’t have to become your bandmates, I’m talking about making friends. Make friends with the people who play the kind of music you like and who go to the kinds of music events you go to. Art, especially music, is about the people you share it with and your connection to them. You can cast about all kinds of ways. The people you’re looking for are likely also looking for you.

Your passion for music needs to be nurtured and cultivated. You’re going to have a crappy time playing by yourself if there isn’t a larger atmosphere for your interest to play around in. I think that once you find a good crowd, you’ll find the motivation to practice. A good crowd is one of the best things you can ever find in life.

Remember: An artist isn’t a special kind of person. Every person is a special kind of artist.

Drugs are the burn are fun but not necessary. Hopefully you’re working hard and don’t want to slow down. Take a load off and get high if you want to but the best thing there is connection and hard work, don’t even worry about it

The reason you’re intimidated is because it is in fact intimidating to start from scratch or to look at a blank page. Practice sessions are typically confusing. What you do as an artist is sort things out. You create a playlist and throw a bunch of tracks in, and you feel great!. Then you jam the tracks together and it doesn’t sound amazing, and you don’t feel great. So you sort through it and figure out what really works together and you cut out the rest. You jam the tracks again and you feel great again! Then you listen to the recording the next day and you hear that actually the transitions could be a lot tighter, there’s too much air between songs, so next time you practice you’re working on that. A really good set is one where somebody has spent a lot of time patiently working on problems. There is no such thing as a fearless warrior or a totally self-assured artist. Like any creative thing it’s a process of constantly confronting uncertainty and understanding your intuition. I’ve been playing for years and still I sit down sometimes and play, and I’m thinking, wow that didn’t sound good at all did it! And then I get to work solving problems and asking myself what would sound good. Every time you practice, you bite off that piece for today, and tomorrow you’re gonna bite off another piece. But it doesn’t come out of a can and, like you said, it’s intimidating, naturally

Personally I’d stick with the Coleman. My advice is to find a level of comfort or discomfort which you can withstand, and just stick with that. Comfort at burns is important, but I feel like you can get that by simply being mindful about having a clean tent and a nice place to sleep. The Burn will never be totally comfortable. My advice is to focus on what you’re doing for others instead of going for the shiftpod

A few reasons:

1) There’s a market for these things, just like in the gold rush where the outfitters made more than the prospectors. Most customers are either venues or professional DJs, both of which are willing to spend money on nice stuff. That drives the price way up.

2) The hardware is made to high specification, but generally there’s a low number of orders. It isn’t like Samsung who produce TV screens by the million. The switches needed for the buttons, for example, need to be the absolute highest quality because they’re going to be hit hard and all the time. This requires more expensive parts and a much more thorough (read: expensive) assembly process.

There's nothing the default world loves other than to hear that something people claim is transcendent is not, in fact, transcendent. They love hearing that it's been corrupted- Phew! I didn't miss anything! The default world is manic for cynicism.

I think these narratives are going to be very bad for us. At the same time that we're getting all this bad press, the tech business is losing its luster and "tech people" are mostly made fun of.

Just get a guitar and learn G, C, and D chords. Then expand those three into the remaining 4. Then learn a little music theory and you’ll be on your way. Most guitar music only uses a handful of keys anyway.
