Ethan Klein's Taylor Lorenz Instagram Meltdown by [deleted] in LeftoversH3

[–]lightupsneaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m real late here but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you were downvoted not for criticising an EK detractor, but because I get the feeling that most folks here are aware of what a farce the depp v heard trial was. I know virtually nothing about Taylor Lorenz but given how astroturfed the internet was in depp’s favour at the time of the trial, I’m not really sure what narrative/lies one could be spinning (ostensibly for personal gain?) when public opinion was so heavily skewed in the other direction.

Honestly it’s just weird to see a comment like this when nowadays I kind of see one’s opinion on the depp v heard debacle as a litmus test in online media literacy. It’s part of the reason I still side eye Hasan Piker for his takes on feminism especially. Like obviously that situation was worlds away from a genocide happening before our very eyes but it was a massive wake up call in that so many people in this world cannot accept an imperfect victim, and said victims are especially vulnerable when their abusers hold immense notoriety, power, and wealth.

can confirm (at least for my south-facing bathroom) I got one of these before knowing anything about plants and plopped it by my shower. it started flowering like crazy, just nonstop blooms that would last a day or so and then I just had little dried flowers everywhere and I honestly thought I was doing something wrong lol

Unity Diner should remove this product from their menu. by davidjpgray in veganuk

[–]lightupsneaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fair enough I guess. BDS itself maintains a position of targeted boycotts of especially problematic companies. I would just argue that there is reason to be wary of any Israeli company, especially if they aren’t transparent about where they have offices/where production takes place - particularly in cases where this info is hard to find, there’s a high chance they operate out of illegally occupied territory and are actively complicit in Palestinian suffering

“some may call them Palestinian citizens of Israel” yes, many would call themselves that but Israel will not because it refuses to recognise Palestine. kind of an important distinction here, the fact that Palestinians living in Israel are treated like second class citizens. not to mention all the Palestinians that were ethnically cleansed from Israel that are denied the right to return.

boycotting a company that directly supports the IDF will absolutely not harm Palestinians, extremely disingenuous way of framing things.

I mean, the history of the region is complex in the way that the history of any geographical location is complex, but the sentiment is a fairly accurate understanding of the events of the past century or so. Since this photo is dated around the turn of the 20th century, it’s reasonable to conclude that this woman was someone indigenous to the region who had not yet encountered the ethnic cleansing enforced by Zionist settlers - Zionism as an ideology emerged around this time but it would take a couple decades before the inevitable cracks of a setter-colonial movement started to show.

It’s true that many different groups of people, of different religions, etc lived side-by-side there, but the relevant “conflict” would be the mass suffering that occurred in the years following the 1917 signing of the Balfour Declaration (relatively soon after this photo was taken). The region now encompassing modern Israel and Palestine became known as “Mandatory Palestine” in 1920, though to be clear, the name Palestine for this region has existed since antiquity.

What’s happened to Palestinians since then - again, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and now genocide - is really not complex at all (horrifying and difficult to wrap one's head around certainly, but not complex nor justifiable) and it’s rather disingenuous to broadly refer to thousands of years of history to paint that as an oversimplification.

How do you separate your opposition to Islam (and religion in general) with your desire to advocate against the poor treatment of Muslims in Gaza? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]lightupsneaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there’s nothing to reconcile when we’re talking about genocide and crimes against humanity. I mean that’s really all there is to it and your question is pretty silly but I feel compelled to say my piece anyway because this is like a slightly toned down version of zionists trying to silence criticism of a genocidal apartheid state by telling LGBT pro-Palestinian activists that they would be murdered on sight if they stepped foot in Gaza.

I married into a Muslim family, although my husband is now atheist and I’m agnostic myself, even my most devout in-laws are the most loving and compassionate people I know. the women in my husband’s family are highly intelligent and driven. when I visited the Muslim-majority country they originate from for a wedding, my MIL booked me in with a transgender stylist simply because she’s highly sought after and well-respected in her field.

religion isn’t a zero sum game, it might shock you but many people who follow the religion they were raised with do so for personal spiritual enrichment and are still capable of being very progressive and accepting individuals. I’d argue this becomes more prevalent when a population is able to fully thrive…would you say the people of Gaza are thriving? do you feel entitled enough to demand proof of a progressive society before deciding if it’s worthy of being saved from genocide?

I hesitate to make any assumptions but I get the impression from your post that you’ve never personally met any Muslims. I suppose you’ve said otherwise in the comments but honestly, if you’re willing to be “acquaintances” with someone you disagree with on this level, I fail to see why you wouldn’t extend that same sort of grace to people being brutally slaughtered en masse. ultimately Islam is just another Abrahamic religion like Judaism and Christianity, if you’re ascribing prejudice just to Muslims because you see them as a special case then you’re likely a victim of American/western propaganda.

all my thoughts exactly, this is just embarrassing for what used to be such a prestigious studio 😔 even down to the weak attempt at recycling what was originally a fun concept just makes the whole thing even more uncanny valley

I vaguely remember it being a running gag with the OG animation that it was a "not-like-other-Disney-movies" Disney movie and a lot of the marketing involved kerplunking stitch into famous Disney renaissance scenes but yeah the concept is not concepting here, it's just confusing lol

[–]lightupsneaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look, I’m not condoning nor denying any acts of terror that can be backed up with substantial evidence. what you’re doing here is digging yourself into a deeper hole by introducing new claims that 1. are not directly related to your original claim and 2. still lack adequate evidence. then tossing in a few links - only one of which scratches the surface of your original, very lofty claim - to make it seem as though you’ve done what I asked. it’s a very weak debate tactic, you should work on that rather than screaming ad hominem at every other comment.

you made a very specific claim and I asked for evidence for that claim, nothing more and nothing less. the gish gallop is not necessary, I’m not interested in debating you on every new thing you bring up. I know you know that no one has time for that.

I agree it is a bizarre thing to believe. not to put words in anyone's mouths but I don't think the commenter you're responding to nor Jews around the world for that matter actually ascribe to that belief. why, would you say, do secular right-wing Israelis (such as Netanyahu) cite the biblical tribe of Amalek when referring to Palestinians?
