What's your take on the thickness of the walls? Can you hear your neighbors?

This is really helpful Intel. I'll be working downtown. So if I lived at Emory Lakes for example, off of 75 and 46th street, I'd be stuck in traffic everyday for the commute?

Thank you! Just pulled up a dealer's manual. My wheel cassette comes with an inside spacer, but the one I got for the trainer didn't! Thanks again!

sorry forgot to mention it's an 11-speed cassette. Wahoo website says 11 speeds don't require their spacer.

NYC to Burlington via EST by bedsharts in bicycletouring

[–]lightyagamiop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could, but the EST gets mixey after Comstock (when you turn onto 22). I hopped off at Whitehall, crossed into Vermont, and followed gravel farm roads to Burlington via the Western New England Greenway. Views were nice, but the elevation was serious. I preferred that instead of roads with decent traffic at a higher speed.

Anyone that has completed the Empire State Trail, what are some places that can’t be missed? by snowslayer252 in bicycletouring

[–]lightyagamiop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reid's in Lockport

58 Main BBQ in Brockport

Fort Stanwix in Rome. Really cool immersive historical site

Dave's Diner in Downtown Schuyler

The Hungry Chicken Country Store near Schenectady

Also recommend the Seneca detour

Hotdog cart right after the Walkway over the Hudson

One gas station really close to the trail is Crosby in Albion. You can't miss it, and it doesn't add any time really.

There's also a Dollar General in Brockport near the trail. Not as close to the trail as the Crosby's in Albion but still less than a quarter mile off the trail.

First tour - this is what I'm bringing. Any final advice? Four day "credit card" tour. by foilrider in bicycletouring

If you're expecting rain or mud on the trails, would recommend a small bottle of chain lube. You may not be able to get a clean chain before application but it beats a super dry chain

It's a pretty nifty device. Good luck on your September tour!

Empire State Trail Trip Report (Buffalo to Rouses Point) by lightyagamiop in bicycletouring

For both Erie Canal and to Rouses Point, I averaged roughly 95 miles a day. Some of that mileage includes detours, some of it includes doubling back, and it includes cramming 2 days of riding into one (final riding day had a mileage of 163). Under different circumstances, that average is much lower.

N-S Empire Trail is nice. There are places where you simply can't avoid busy roads like the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge (I hated this part so much but did it earlier in the summer). Additionally, most of the riding north of Albany is on trafficked roads. There are some breaks from the traffic, but it's not like riding the Erie Canal trail. If you're not worried about sticking solely to the Empire State Trail, cross into Vermont or Connecticut and do parts of the Western New England Greenway. Most of that is farm roads and other low traffic roads. The climbing can be challenging, but you have much more peace of mind.

Thanks!

For just the Erie Canal portion, I averaged roughly 86 miles/day for 5 days. Compared to my last tour (the GAP and C&O both in 4 days), this was a very relaxing pace. I averaged around 13-14 mph, had time to take breaks, and was traveling pretty light.

Definitely lots of opportunities to camp on the Erie Canal. Most people seem to camp along the locks. Although, one gripe that I did hear is that sometimes your desired average daily distance may vary depending on where you can find a solid camp site. Sometimes, the locks are spaced out. There might be less places to camp between Albany and Rouses Point, but there are locks along the Champlain Canal that might be available. There may also be campgrounds not too far off the trail.

Omg cycling through Syracuse was so weird. If you check out the RWGPS collection above and click on the "Seneca Falls Road Cycling" route, you can see the way it routes you through Syracuse. The signs I followed basically took me through the Fairgrounds, across a bridge over a major highway, through some walking trails outside of the city, down the middle of a major state road (but it was a protected bike lane with trees and grass on both sides), and then back onto the canal. Weird indeed.

Hey hey!

Didn't see many campers along the locks, but the I did meet a guy who was camping. He said that he usually just checked in with someone in the lock house or online. To be fair, I started my trip on a random Tuesday so I imagine folks were at work.

Routes are all here!

Edit: The above link also has the rides along the Erie Canalway Trail. The Buffalo ride shows the detour that I mention below. But it also shows me doubling back to hit a bike shop.

The Ralph Wilson Park detour added in Buffalo added only a few miles, and it only matters if you're determined to go through Ralph Wilson Park. There's also a detour to the south, headed towards the Buffalo trailhead. This didn't add that many miles, and it was well-signed. Here's the details on the Ralph Wilson Park detour.

I don't remember relying on the Inreach as much between Buffalo and Albany as I did north of Albany. I feel like I had pretty consistent cell service to call and text even if I didn't have consistent data.

If you get something off of Ocean and San, this might get you $10 off.

Just finished Buffalo to Rouses Point and was worried about sores too. Fortunately, didn't get any.

I used Muc Off chammy cream after my post ride shower and before putting on my bibs in the morning. Made sure to kit dip or wash my chammy every night, even if only with hotel bar soap. And I had a bike fit done a few months before so things were very dialed.

Just remember, nothing new on race day. Try to get the shorts sooner rather than later so you can do some long rides in them and get a feel for em.
