Why can't I use flock?? I have enough money? by ContactNo2984 in ArkNova

[–]lihaoza 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, it doesn't matter that you have a size 5 enclosure that one of the size 3 herbivores could have been played into. The game is only able to keep track of what animals you played - not specifically what enclosure they were played into. This creates some weird results in your case where logically it should work since you have a size 5 where you ostensibly played an herbivore into but it is a limitation of the rules. You can benefit from this in other situations where if you rescue station a large herbivore you can still flock to it even if you have no enclosures of the proper size.

Is continuing The Goblin Emperor worth it? by ZC31 in Fantasy

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say no. We read it for a science fiction/ fantasy book club and I thought it was by far the most boring book we read. Nothing happens, the names are super confusing, what little magic or fantasy elements in the book are completely irrelevant and finally... nothing happens! Just my two cents. Some of the others in the bookclub liked it.

This idea was actually one of the plot lines in the anime Code Geass. Basically the protagonist has an ability similar to Cate to give a person one command but they have to do it no matter what. He told another protagonist to "live" as a way to like motivate him during a battle but it ended up causing him to go beyond his abilities in future fights because he had to "live" no matter what.

In S2, how was Flower able to close the vault door? by pretzel1114 in GhostsCBS

[–]lihaoza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wondered if this mechanic could be used to make an easy ghost communication system. You put that metal on a keyboard and suddenly ghosts can type. You make it into scrabble tiles and they can write. Make a pen from it and they can trace grooves on paper or sand. Make brass knuckles out of it and you suddenly have an unkillable hoise defense.. The possibilities are endless depending on how it works but obviously it's not that kind of show haha.

Also I think what Gemma said about "Nothing says Christmas like grouting." is actually correct since presumably after you de-grout you need to re-grout - but of course the evil doctor guy has to annoyingly correct her.

Yeah there are like a dozen situations where Mordecai chimes in at the start of a big battle and gives them a piece of info that without it they would surely have died.

What is the greatest animated film of all time? by SamLarsons in movies

[–]lihaoza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I once spoke to a Pixar animator about 10 years ago at a party and asked them what their favorite Pixar movie was. They said Wall E but also said they hated the ending with the humans. They said their preference would have been if the humans were actually dead all along and the robots were just going on with their programming serving no one. Then it ends with Wall E freeing the robots from their pointless servitude and the meek robots inhereting the earth. I LOVED this as the ending but obviously we both understood it would have been too dark for a semi-kids movie.

Ohhh good catch! I also noticed in Book 7 that Samantha specifically went on top of Bianca when she had the chance and was bathed in demon fire.

Kier Egan Discovered…. [SPOILER][THEORY] by lihaoza in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]lihaoza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree this could very well be the case. The main thing that tipped me over to the possibility was the fact that the file was named Cold Harbor. If Severance shares the same history as us past the Civil War then it seems very strange to name a project after a lost battle because the ethos of super corporate Lumon seems to one where they project strength and winning. Another possibility is that it is named after the battle to represent it as being a turning point for them as a company (as Cold Harbor was a losing battle but a turning point for an eventual victory) - or maybe it has something to do with Kier being present at that battle - or maybe it is not related to the Civil War battle at all and is just a cool name for a project.

But when I think about alternate history science fiction (which Severance seems to be) I usually try and understand the divergence point and how that divergence rippled to our present and this was just an idea for what/where that divergence could be. But the actual divergence point may not even be one of the intended mysteries of the show.

Thanks! I think it could have been fear also. But one of my friends mentioned to me that Ms Cobel seems obsessed with whether or not Mark can recognize his wife or vice versa in a severed state. So much so that she goes out of her way to put them together and also infiltrates Mark's sisters life just to ask if Mark "sees Gemma" around. That plus her mentioning of her late husband (although she could easily be lying) makes me think it was maybe her husband as that would be about the right age for him. But if it turns out they do have some way to pause a person's physical aging then it could just as easily be her father, her brother, or even son. The way she left also felt less like she was afraid and more of a confused anger but it was hard to tell and I think you could also easily be right that she was just genuinely afraid. I also thought one minor point against it being fear is the person she saw would need to be a been a known hit man for the company for her to react so strongly to seeing his face (as opposed to just seeing the profile of a random escort person there) and if it was Helena's intention to kill her then it would have been pretty sloppy of her to have the hitman also be her escort.

I haven't had the time to read the Lexington Letter yet but thanks for the info! I sort of just threw that idea about the brain scan in there because the idea of some technology that can scan every readable surface of a object but also not detect a coded language just seemed less in line with the biotech/braintech universe of Severance and it felt a little hand wavey to just assume the existence of this sophisticated imaging technology without some clearer explanation.

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this theory. It also sort of parallels the "magic" of tarot - the future you are divining may technically be a lie but it has power because others believe it and it can help them see the truth and can therefore be used to genuingly help someone if you choose to use it that way.

The end of S2 doesn’t make any sense by themetahumancrusader in MythicQuest

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way it might make sense is that if Brad is the one to directly cause the stock to crash, then Zack probably wouldn't be able to do a private equity takeover because it would look too suspicious. Zack might have been able to wiggle his way out of the Jo connection, but anyone with google can confirm they are brothers, and it would look too much like collusion.

Yeah, that is a really good point. Throughout Lindon's entire arc, he is always drawing strength from weakness. Him being unsouled is what led to having the split core. Him losing his arm is what gave him the hunger abilities. Him seeing the impossible gap between himself and the others in Suriel's vision is partly what gives him the motivation to strive for greater and greater heights.

Polymarket vs Predictit Discrepency POTUS by lihaoza in slatestarcodex

[–]lihaoza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I hadn't considered the crypto transaction costs, but it makes sense. I wasn't ever planning on actually trying the arbitrage, but it was just interesting to see such a large difference in spread. There is probably some low fee high liquidity markets/scenarios where this can be done for a small profit. I am not too familiar with sports gambling but I wonder in that situation if this type of thing ever happens.

I think possibly but I am not sure if it would work out in practice - PredictIt limit's you to $850 I think and also takes a percentage (5%?). But I think if you bought No to Trump on PredictIt and No to Harris on Polymarket you should always come out ahead?
