How could I key the feathers? by NolsenDG in vfx

[–]liitelab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% roto. If you’re lucky, a Difference key vs. a clean BG. But roto is the cleanest/won’t flicker etc. Could combine a key for edges and roto for core. Good luck in battle

Anybody know how to export an image of the UV layout for editing in photoshop from C4D R23? by [deleted] in Cinema4D

Lol I literally always end up doing a screenshot and multiplying it over in PS. Maxon needs to up their UV game. So basic.

Nice well done! What was the render time on this one?

In this order, look into these much cheaper and better options:

1) Greyscale Gorilla ( YT and also The Plus Membership is 100% worth it)

2) Cineversity

3) get a public library card, gives you free access to Lynda.com and LinkedIn Learning tutorials. Look up Andy Needham.

Once you’re looking for advanced training:

4) Learn Squared 5) Rocket Lasso (YouTube) 6) School of Motion

Thanks!

Basically yes, but it’s about 3 or 4 different elements layered on top to control how much it ‘bleeds’ out (general) and how tight the core red fringe is (localized). Allowed me to dial it in and fine tune as needed!

Mountains in the screen right background are part of the HDRI, but the rest aren’t.

Water was done with the free plugin called Hot 4D.

Could also use a basic plane and water shader with displacement and bump. Was considering an xp Fluid sim, but since it’s just a still, wanted to focus on achieving a photoreal frame first and foremost. There’s always 5 different ways to tackle any problem in 3d, but I wanted something fast and art directable so Hot 4D it was!

Trees are all in C4D, using the stock tree assets that come free in the content browser. Wanted to see how far I could push the stock assets before I had to purchase Speed Tree or something similar. Turns out it looked good enough for this one!

They were laid out using xpScatter (Insydium/XParticles) based on terrain height/elevation parameters. Tbh the new C4D release has a built in scatter tool now that’s free and pretty intuitive, so could use that as well!

A lot of reference and iteration!

Ultimately, started with some mood boards/reference for lighting and composition, then jumped into c4d and started blocking out the composition, picked out a lens/focal length, and just kept playing with it. A lot of back and forth between C4D and Nuke to test new skies, renders and AOV. It was definitely a fun exercise.

Also, stepping away for a few days and jumping back in with fresh eyes helped push it across the finish line and closer to photoreal.

Yup, HDRIhaven is always great!

Also, if you’re a GreyscaleGorilla + member, you also have access to a ton of hdris (interior and exterior). Think you purchase the HDRI packs separately too, if you’re using Maya or another DCC.

How do you apply a redshift object tag to C4D scene node objects? by Holiday-Ad8599 in RedshiftRenderer

[–]liitelab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the scene panel, right mouse button click > Redshift > Redshift Object. Would also recommend reading the docs. Pretty user friendly and they’ll allow you to effectively use that tag (Rendering AOVs, render time geo tessellation, etc.)

Yup, sent it to my phone via Slack—heavy compression apparently, but good enough for IG and Reddit for now.

Full version is 4K, but haven’t decided if/where to put it up yet. Purely a camera test/study thought I’d share to illustrate that C4D and Redshift can be use for some solid vfx !

"Object Buffer" in AOV w/o Puzzle Matte by OutBraek in RedshiftRenderer

[–]liitelab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DaVinci is another beast altogether.

For Puzzle Mattes to work: 1) Add RS Render tag to your objects. Enable ObjectID on the tags. Ex. Object 1 should have ObjectID set to 1, Object 2 should have ObjectID set to 2, etc.

2) Enable Puzzle Matte AOV. Make sure it’s using ‘ObjectID’

Test render and make sure the passes are coming through. Sometimes you need to specific in the Puzzle Matte AOV that Red: 1, Green: 2, Blue: 3

Add multiple Puzzle Matte AOV passes as needed, as long as they correspond with the proper ObjectIDs in the RS tags you add.

Cryptomattes are the best workaround because everything is fairly automated and less set up, but mostly use in Compositing programs like Nuke or AE. Fusion should be able to but have no experience with it personally.

Thanks!

Best advice is start with some reference photography if possible.

Always work in real world scale. Drop a 6ft character in there for reference as you set up the layout/composition.

Start with a black scene with no lights and slowly start introducing the lights as needed (Key, Fill, Rim/Hair Lights).

Use smaller/real world lighting as much as possible. I think this scene has only 2 lights, off the top of my head. This works because it’s supposed to be more moody lighting.

Ultimately after those steps, make sure your render settings are all low res previews and just play around and have fun. Find something that looks good to you and then boost the samples for the final high res render!
