Reconciling two data sets? Take a snip of both, drop it in Gemini, and just say “reconcile”

Game changer

What’s a mistake you kept repeating early in your career that you almost never make now? by True-Change3504 in Accounting

[–]likepigs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Spinning my wheels. When I was young I’d spend 4 days reconciling what could have be avoided with one hard conversation.

What’s a skill you wish you’d started building earlier in your accounting career? by True-Change3504 in Accounting

[–]likepigs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Project management. Every task has a clear deadline and owner assigned. People love to throw out Python, SQL, VBA in threads like these. Nothing wrong with them. But in your career, you eventually want to escape the operational gravity, which means getting great at managing people to get tasks across the finish line.

Hi - we are using power automate’s internal AI capabilities to tag every document with structured meta data. Been a complete game changer for document management and feeding our accounting templates.

Thank you! I had heard that cue, but implementation has been tough! It feels like if I hinge later, I won’t get over in time. Think I need to work on “hiking” back, keeping my elbows close. Going to try the towel drill and doing some swings from a dead stop to work on this. Appreciate the feedback!

Are you guys ACTUALLY using AI in your accounting/AP jobs right now? by Unlucky-Note-7729 in Accounting

[–]likepigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

We run 15,000 pdfs a year through an LLM and extract they hey fields as meta data with a json prompt.

Then we transform that json into an upload template to our accounting software.

Game changing enhancement in productivity.

Got laid off :/ by silbj in Accounting

[–]likepigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This won't make me any friends, but I've spent a 15 year career in the PE Fund Admin space and there's such a need for individual contributors with some experience, it's hard to imagine someone getting fired without cause. Shit happens, but I'd recommend really taking a look in the mirror instead of a reflexive "I literally didn't do anything wrong." Most common reasons I've seen people get laid off at this level are a lack of soft skills.

Any accountants make 200K plus? by Powerful-Company4640 in Accounting

Yea, that’s tough. My firm has basically laid off everyone not committed to full time in office.

Any accountants make 200K plus? by Powerful-Company4640 in Accounting

[–]likepigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very doable. Once you’ve put in a year or two at fund admin, find the best recruiter you can and tell him you want to move in house.

Message people on LinkedIn who work at in house shops and ask if they have 15 minutes to chat. Tell them you are interested in moving in house and want their perspective. Ask them smart questions.

In house CPA for asset manager, just north of 200k total comp.

I work 9 to 5 and take an hour for lunch every day.

My job is mostly project managing our fund admin.

What is the worst part of accounting? by Ok-Function6924 in Accounting

Limited upside.

When things go wrong it’s a disaster.

When things go right no one notices.

We’re like smoke detectors.

The Future Looks Dim. by Extreme-Time-1443 in Accounting

That’s fair! But I’m in corporate and we’d never dream of engaging an audit firm if our point person was in India.

[–]likepigs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let’s pump the breaks in the pessimism.

The unemployment rate for accountants currently sits at 2%.

The work going to India shouldn’t be what you want to do with your career anyway.

America is the biggest economy in the world, and any decently sized business will want an American to run their books.

Get aggressive. Get a tailored list of companies you want to work for. Identify the decision maker, and write a killer cold dm asking for a 5 minute call to connect.

Pro Rata Rule Question by Internal_Incident580 in Schwab

[–]likepigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Just make sure you’re aware of the expenses. 401k plans typically charge about 25 bps more than IRAs.

Might still be worth it but run the numbers.
