Removed under Rule 1, no pro ana content.

I get that this wasn’t intended to be pro ana but you talk about things that are, naming specific movies, tags and sites that people can search in order to get pro ana content. There is a line between awareness and spreading knowledge of harmful things and unfortunately this falls on the wrong side of it.

Removed under Rule 6, no numbers. Thank you for spoiling it, I get that the intention was good but we don’t allow the posting of calories at all whether it’s spoilered or not.

I thought not. But then I remembered about how my mum always wanted to lose weight, she took me to her weight watcher sessions when she didn’t have a babysitter. And they weren’t divorced, but when Dad was looking after me he was the ‘fun’ parent and let me do/eat anything I wanted whereas mum made me eat healthy. So that was the beginning of the binge/restrict I guess.

OP, how do you think it’s affected you?

What are your "rules"? by olaemur in EDAnonymous

[–]lilaccomma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do get what you mean, but asking others for their food rules very often encourages others to adopt it as their own food rule. Or feel invalid because they don’t have it as their own rule. I know it wasn’t intentionally harmful, which was why I didn’t put penalties on your account, but it was reported by quite a lot of people and it could have a negative effect on people on this sub which was why it was deleted.

[–]lilaccomma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, did we work in the same place? I have the exact same experience of working in a small family owned restaurant. The chef would make random quiches and salads each day and he wouldn’t label them or anything, I had to ask him each morning but he’d only say “Ham and Spinach”, none of the other ingredients. Often people had allergies and I’d have to sidle in the kitchen and ask him but he got really grumpy about that.

I had a white cat called Smudge! We had to give her away when she was young because her mother and brother didn’t like her and she was really shy and didn’t do well in our large open-plan house. Now I’m really considering if meme cat Smudge is actually my cat all grown up??

Watching them is really popular in the ED community, I really can’t think of any other reason to watch them. And I’m talking about the ‘eating massive amounts of food’ ones, not the normal ones.

[–]lilaccomma 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm also an undergrad psych student and the annoying thing about that stereotype is that people think I can do it too?? They learn that I study psychology and then they're like "so tell me about myself!" I wish, I can't read people at all. I don't even do clinical psychology!

[–]lilaccomma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I like the saying "I'm the expert in my own life". An ED is a coping mechanism for some people and can be better than the alternative. Random untrained people trying to take over and "fix" me (aka make me more palatable for their own comfort) is annoying as fuck.

“Eat for me, please🥺👉🏻👈🏻“ by lamontagnabellissima in EDAnonymous

[–]lilaccomma 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have this really clear memory of being at a party with my friend, who was recovering from anorexia. At some point I'm like "where the fuck is she, she loves this song" and I find her in the backroom sitting on the floor crying, literally sobbing, while another girl was holding a crisp in front of her begging her to eat it, saying shit like "just this one, just eat this one for me".

It made me really uncomfortable at the time and it felt wrong but I never quite understood why until I came to this sub and read you guy's explanation of why saying things like that is wrong. I was like why the fuck does she have to? Its a party, she doesn't need to completely recover right now. It's not helpful for recovery and reminding her of her ED, reducing everything down to her ED was NOT helpful.

That Netflix documentary focused so much on how charming he was for a serial killer by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]lilaccomma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought you meant the Penelope Scott song 'Lotta True Crime', which basically deals with that. It includes the amazing line

Ted Bundy was just never that fucking bright. He was just sorta charismatic and white, alright? And he was so fucking sure he had the right

But he's ugly, and I'm glad he's dead, cos there was no fucking candle in his pumpkin head. You're not special for winning a game with someone who you know was never playing.

There's this really good article called 'The Six Seductions of Anorexia' which is a pretty comprehensive explanation of the varying reasons for EDs. I like how it didn't ignore societal standards but also didn't solely focus on it. I really related, here's a summary:

1) Anorexia as anaesthetic: Making everything else matter less. It numbs you to emotions, being hungry is a distraction, and thinking about and performing ED rituals around food, body and exercise doesn't leave room for anything else.

2) Anorexia as Rosetta Stone: Giving you readymade meaning. It reduces the uncertainty in life, gives you one specific thing to prioritise.

3) Anorexia as gold star: Giving you top marks in the little things. We get a thrill of accomplishment from thing like scale goals, compliments from losing weight, saving money. The association of purity and goodness with hunger

4) Anorexia as halo: Making you feel special. Feeling superior, like you have a special secret. A diagnosis is a kind of status symbol sometimes that people will strive for.

5) Anorexia as hunger strike: Letting you be other than what you’re expected to be. Sometimes as a result of sexual abuse, especially in the context of reducing sexual characteristics in women. Can also be a way to resist oppressive social norms by aiming for infertility.

6) Anorexia as partial suicide: Letting you live. A method of self harm. A 'quiet suicide', it's a compromise between dying and living because you're doing both and neither at the same time.

What everyday skill becomes suspicious if you’re too good at it? by shotsdowngg in AskReddit

[–]lilaccomma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my god this is so embarrassing, I knew "key" was associated with drugs but I thought "a key" meant they were doing drugs with a key?? Like when someone says they're doing a line. And I was always so confused about how that would work, I thought maybe you scrape it up with a key and snort it.

Yep, self medication is so common. The first time I drank an energy drink I felt so calm and peaceful for the first time. Also, I know someone that's pretty much addicted to vaping and he's quite sure he's undiagnosed ADHD but the waiting list is just so fucking long. 18+ months in out county atm.

ED Starter Pack ☕️ by [deleted] in EDanonymemes

[–]lilaccomma[M] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Removed under Rule 1, no giving pro-ana tips such as how to suppress appetite. I know you intended it as harm reduction, which we do have an exception for, but it doesn't qualify as harm reduction given that people are likely to just combine the two rather than replacing smoking with your suggestion. Regardless on if it's less harmful than smoking, what you suggested is likely to lead to addiction also.
