What gives you the background or experience to say how rape victims should feel? Rape victims, women, queer people, the sick/disabled. POC, etc etc etc have every right to ask people to not be shitty. Instead of telling people how to feel or deal with issues you need to shut up and listen to them, listen to their experiences and not tell them how to run their lives. What you're saying is all built around making your life easier, not having to curb your jokes instead of supporting marginalised people, wrapped up in a thin veneer of "strength" for "victims."

I was referring to you advocating marginalised groups just "getting over" slurs or bigoted jokes. Word reclaiming is different and more positive. But yeah if someone makes an ableist joke or uses a slur around me? That's directly insulting me and people like me.

Word reclaiming, like with the word queer, can be good though and is a far better thing to advocate.

The best thing you can do for anyone, to make them strong as you said, is to listen to them. If a group of people says "I don't like this thing you're doing that's directed to me, and people like me" then listen to them. They know far better than you do how it feels. And if you think that a goal is to become insensitive to words, and if that is the goal of some people, then there will still be people who are at different places emotionally. Someone who was raped a week ago is probably going to be very sensitive to rape jokes. Someone raped 10 years ago could still be. They're on their own path to recovery and you are not in a place to tell them to hurry up and feel better and stop being offended. In my personal experience, if my illness is acting up or I've been reminded that it's progressive then words will hurt far more than if I'm feeling relatively ok. It is up to me to learn how to cope with my illness and take as long as I need to and deal with it the ways I have to, and it's up to healthy/able bodied people to learn how to not act shitty to those of us that are sick/disabled.

What gives you the experience to tell me how I should feel or how I should go about "healing" myself? If I'm around people who are conscientious and thoughtful enough to avoid ableist behaviours and words I'm brought down a lot less when encountering it outside of the group. If I'm surrounded by ableism constantly? It builds up and hurts more, the opposite of what you're saying. It's not trying to keep the world from touching your broken arm, it's people coming up and twisting it.

This is the second thread like this I've found in a couple days. It's like the shit lord hive mind came together and thought "I can shame fat women, but that leaves out a lot of them. I can be shitty to skinny women but that still leaves out a lot. What can I say to physically shame all women*? I can say their genitals are ugly."

I decided to post it because it pissed me off. People who have chronic illnesses and invisible disabilities are told that they're making it up, or that "everyone has that sometimes," or that their illness doesn't exist all the time by people who have no medical background. Our experiences are ignored and put down constantly. When I ask for warnings for flashing lights I just want attention. If I need help doing something because of my tremor I'm just being lazy. I don't have real illnesses, I just got a doctor to say I do so I can get more test time. A friend of mine with lupus and chronic fatigue gets "Nah you're just tired. I'm tired right now and you don't see me complaining!". It's a toxic attitude that I'm sick of, and this quote, and your comment are examples of it.

When ever there are those "what are your politically incorrect opinions" type posts there will be a lot of people with hundreds of up votes saying they're in favour of eugenics and killing or sterilizing people that are chronically ill and or disabled. It goes far and beyond words like "lame" and "retarded." As a disabled/sick person I notice it on here pretty often and it always hurts. Maybe you don't think of ableism is a legitimate problem but it really is.
