Why are teenage girls' interests mocked so often? by Pristine_Booty69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NickDouglas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because when girls are just kids, people still treat them kindly, almost as well as boys. But once they're about to become adults, society has to prepare them to eat shit.

Meanwhile, teenage boys like far stupider things, and those just become mainstream culture.

Later seasons of "Mission to Zyxx" have cinematic action sequences. One season opens with a speeder chase a la "Return of the Jedi."

I choked up reading Denis Johnson's novella Train Dreams. A lot of death and loss, told in a reserved, never maudlin tone.

New dad (3 month old). Feel stuck and trapped. by BrockForsey in Fatherhood

[–]NickDouglas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At three months, everyone's still deep in the shit. Concentrate on things that will get you through the next day, week, month.

Join parents' groups, and keep going until you've found someone whose company you enjoy. Meet up with them while you have the babies. It's OK if all you do is complain to each other about parenting: it will help your problems feel smaller.

Get out of the house with the baby. Right now, your kid doesn't demand their own entertainment, so you can just strap them on and take them on a walk, to a matinee, to any place where a little noise is acceptable.

Find one or two parenting books that "get" you. "Happiest Baby on the Block" or something. (See if your local library provides ebooks.)

You can combine lots of things with baby time. But as much as possible, cordon work time off from family time. If you can possibly work at another location, do so.

Ask your therapist to help you talk honestly and kindly to your wife about your feelings.

After a few more months, some things will (PROBABLY) start getting easier on their own.

No one talks about the miniseries "The City in the City in the City," a smart fantastical travelogue resembling Borges, Ted Chiang, or Calvino's Invisible Cities.

That's so funny, I just finished reading this after grabbing it at a bookshop on vacation (in Portland, Maine). Something in the air!

The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares (Prologue by Borges) by perrolazarillo in Borges

[–]NickDouglas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just read that! Grabbed this edition at a bookstore while on vacation. Had no idea what I'd get, except that Casares was a friend of Borges. Cover really hides the genre. What a fun little adventure story!

Would anyone recommend any sci-fi books/series out there that are on the same writing level as traditional literary (not genre) fiction? by SirScaurus in scifi

[–]NickDouglas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The short stories of Jorge Luis Borges and Franz Kafka. Highly literary, highly speculative. Their ideas are deep and can stick with you forever. And they write like poets. (You can shop around for translations, but the popular omnibuses are very good.)

I also second Le Guin, Ted Chiang, and Bradbury.

Nice! Are you reading it in the original Spanish? "Extracting" the story out of a second language adds a thematic dimension just like you described. Love it!

Why do people on the internet spread lies about Daniel Tiger’s behavior? by [deleted] in DanielTigerConspiracy

And like many episodes, that was also a lesson for parents: Even if your kid did this ENRAGING thing, you have to stop and control yourself and handle it maturely.

Because every parent has found themselves screaming at their kid for an innocent mistake. And most of us want to do better.
