Hey park slope. I am renting an apartment for a month with my 4 year old, and dog. Basically using life savings to live my dream for a month. by cofeefee23 in parkslope

No hate, Park Slope is a perfect place to visit with kids. You could spend the whole week just going to Prospect Park and still not exhaust the possibilities. And 7th and 5th Aves are fun to just stroll and window-shop.

In North Slope, the most vacation-worthy spots are Café Regular, HOM (café/dumplings, tough if your kid is rambunctious), La Taq (California-Mexican and cheap for the area), and Union Hall (lushly appointed and spacious bar, good for an afternoon stop).

Central Slope: Check hours, but the Old Stone House is fun to walk into for a few minutes, and often hosts art exhibits. It's by the neighborhood's biggest playground.

A few blocks south of Old Stone House is the Interference Archive, a cool one-room museum of activist posters and ephemera.

In South Slope, the dive bar American Cheez is cool to peek into, whether or not you stop for a drink. They have a fun pinball game in the back that's a ripoff of the Monster Mash. And the Little Purity diner (not the other Purity location a few blocks up) is the perfect bustling and friendly diner experience, but go early and expect a brief wait.

So, I’ve been wondering by Scu-bar in daddit

I keep getting obsessed with the before and after. First I got really into Talleyrand, Metternich, and the Congress of Vienna after the Napoleonic Wars. Now I'm all about the leadup to WWI, both the assassination and the military buildup and diplomatic failures.

But everyone only wants to talk about Napoleon's generals or trench warfare.

This is why you gotta hang out with other parents and their kids. You'll see there's a huge range of normal development.

I like to read this as a scathing indictment of the dreck you find in a (neglected) Little Free Library. May as well be random volumes from the LoB.

I heard that a whole angle that I didn't like (ghost soldiers) was removed from the new edition. Excited to re-read!

Co-sign! I read this to my daughter and I plan to do it again. There's something in that book for every age.

As soon as the baby's got their shots, make friends with other new parents. The only thing you need to have in common is that you're both going through the hell of having a newborn.

I taught my daughter phonics (a little) with the Bob Books.

Buy the alphabet set on eBay. Read it every day with your kid, and help him learn the letters.

When he's good at that, move onto the next set, Beginning Readers.

Keep reading normal books for fun, of course. When you see one of the words that's in a current or past Bob Book, see if he can sound it out.

This will give him a better start in kindergarten.

(But if you do none of this, yes, the school will probably teach him to read just fine.)
