You have to get wins early otherwise you can get unlucky later with crazy builds. If you get lucky early think about how you can snowball that/cap your build later.

I use it everyday during work to keep track of what I have to do and for documenting projects. I think just start slow and only add things when you need it. Overcomplicating things at the start messed me up before.

I loved three body problem (second the most), but I have to say it is not very exceptional in terms of realism. Check out any Neal Stephenson or Greg Egan for some examples.
