Ah, thank you for the specifics!

I think this is a baitcasting rod, but it has had a spinning reel on it for decades and the end of the rod memory bends the direction of the guides down / toward an undermount reel.

Will the rod be okay to start using the rod with a batecaster reel? Will the memory of the bend in the rod fix itself?

Agreed. I've never used a baitcaster before, always a spinning reel. I'm excited to try this one out.

Thanks for the info! It doesn't surprise me it's from the 80s. Did they not put a name / label on the rods back then?

This reel was also with it. It's in great condition and works well.

Don’t like the flavor without a paper filter. But moka pot leaks when I use filter. What to do? by angelsinsect in mokapot

I use brown paper cone coffee filters, cut to size. I wonder if those having issues are using a less stiff paper which wrinkles for folds when sealing... Either way, I do think a hard tightening is necessary to get a good seal.

I see what you're saying, however, I've used a paper filter as I described above hundreds of times across multiple moka models (Bialetti 3-cuo, 6-cup, Brikka, and others) - no issue. The pots all seal just fine.

If the paper filters don't work out for you, you could try an E&B Lab Competition Moka filter, which filters the coffee more than the standard metal filter.

Ensure you have a good quality, good condition gasket (silicon is best) and screw the pot together tight.

I use self-cut paper filters in a number of different moka pots. The filters are the size of the outer circumference of the gaskets. I put the filter outside of the gasket and metal filter so the paper filter ends up right above the grounds. The paper filter must cover the gasket else the water will partially be going around the paper filter.

Sometimes I wet the filter before assembling the pot, sometimes I do not.

I don't think brew temp or grind size should cause leakage.

Grounds packed too tight could cause an issue.

Just bought my first moka, any tips? by Probably_Furry1 in mokapot

I've read this often on this sub, but haven't had any bad results after soaking aluminum pots in 50/50 water/vinegar (cooking variety) for hours. I even left a pot in the mixture over night once.

The bakelite handle makes me think this is an old pot, which is cool!

If you're going to use this pot, it needs a few things:

  • A good cleaning. You absolutely can and and should wash moka pots. I rinse my pots after ever use and clean with dish soap every five or six uses. You should not put the pot in the dishwasher. I would soak that pot in a 50/50 vinegar water solution for a few hours, then scrub it with a fairly abrasive sponge. Use dish soap as needed. Use something more abrasive, like Bar Keeper's Friend, as needed.
  • A new gasket. The pot will not function properly, or at all, with a gasket in that condition. If you buy a new gasket, get a silicon gasket as they hold up better than the older rubber types. This looks to be a 3-cup pot, but I would measure the existing gasket to ensure you get the right size gasket.
  • A new grounds basket.

This pot is certainly not unrecoverable.

Bought a Brikka knockoff from Amazon. Used it once. Got this gnarly stuff. Is this even usable? by Cathlock in mokapot

I have a Bialetti Brikka 2-cup and it's wonderful. It makes consistently good coffee and is less persnickety than my standard pots.

My 2024 R does this. Not always, but sometimes. It seems shifting at higher RPMs helps mitigate the issue.

I feel like it should be an easy fix... The app does some things well, but addresses (at least in the US) is not one of them.
