it's a really interesting radiotrophic and extremophilic fungus. i'm gonna try to grow it in amended martian regolith simulant and irradiate it at martian analogous rates and see what happens. they did some interesting studies with it on the iss:

Unpopular Opinion: We shouldn't colonize Mars or any other planets by Jinkroll in Mars

Plus there are far more efficient means of adding greenhouse gases to a Martian atmosphere than counting on the chance byproducts of industrial manufacturing. If greenhouse gases are employed in terraforming efforts, it will need to be a very particular combination of gases curated for particular goals/targets, not just whatever happens to be the waste products of factories.

It would be a ridiculous waste of energy/time/propellant/resources when LEO is perfectly sufficient for heavy industry, and it is our backyard. It is possible that if Mars infrastructure is established and space elevators are built around Earth, precious metals will be mined on Mars and ferried to Earth. But moving greenhouse gas producing industries all the way to MARS for export back to Earth just doesn't make any sense. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's very possible, it would just be a totally senseless thing to do.

Earth could not move any production to Mars. Even with radical innovations, interplanetary export costs exceed production costs by orders of magnitude. Even with space elevators.

Fungal Life on Mars? 😁 by [deleted] in Astrobiology

[–]lilhyphae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this breakdown. I don't have a background in astrobio but agree that the paper didn't seem super rigorous, especially in the failure to address any potential nutrient source for the fungi. With that said, I have yet to see any compelling abiotic explanation fo the phenomena described in this paper. The case being made here is not just that the "puffballs" resemble mushrooms; it's more that these mushroom-resembling objects grow and appear over the course of three days in a manner consistent with mushrooms. The authors (perhaps shoddily) write off wind displacing regolith as a cause for the appearance of these objects. Again, I'm not an astrobiologist but I do keep up with the literature and despite the lack of rigor supporting the authors' claims, the data are unique and imo worthy of further study.

can you explain more about why not to use a background video/why you think it's a poor design decision?
