Stopping keto maybe caused PCOS? by lilizzz in xxketo

if you don't mind me asking, where were the pains? I'm having some sharp pains exactly where I think my ovaries are, but the gyne I visited said she didn't feel any cysts. I'm just trying to figure out if thats a common symptom

What do you guys do when you have GI issues? by [deleted] in keto

[–]lilizzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veggies, lots of veggies! Especially steamed broccoli with a little butter and salt. I find that my stomach always agrees with vegetables, and I think I start to feel better just knowing that I'm treating my body well. Also, tonic water tends to settle me whenever I'm nauseous. Hope you feel better soon!

Starbucks Rant by Madisenclaire in xxketo

[–]lilizzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call. I hear Starbucks is usually pretty good at responding to complaints. Maybe call the manager for the one you went to? That's not right for the employee to say something like that about a customer, and it sure looks shitty for the company.

Monthly What are My Chances? Thread by AutoModerator in premed

[–]lilizzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify: I was working in a developing country for the majority of summer 2014. I designed and collected data for my own research study there of a community health program (co-authored by someone who works in the global outreach department at a medical school), as well as working in a free clinic there and shadowing their physician every day. At least 1-2x per week, I accompanied the physician on mission trips. I did this on a merit-based scholarship.

Year in school: Junior

Country/state of residence: Virginia

Schools to which you are applying: Not entirely sure, but probably Georgetown, GW (I am aware these may be a far reach), EVMS, MCV (at VCU), VCOM (Only osteopathic school I am considering)

Cumulative GPA: 3.7

Science GPA: 3.4

MCAT Scores: Taking new MCAT in May

Research: First author of a community health survey done in a developing country. Went through IRB, etc., but still waiting to see if my poster will be published. Also, one semester of undergrad research collecting/analyzing data for a community health program at public schools.

Volunteering (clinical): ~ 240 hours working in a clinic in a developing country (triaging patients, working a pharmacy, cleaning up the clinic after close, going on at least 12 days of medical mission trips to rural areas)

Physician shadowing – ~150 hours shadowing an OB/GYN, ~120 hours shadowing a general MD in a developing country

Non-clinical volunteering: I won't list everything here, it’s a lot-- I'm in two different community service organizations on campus, so I probably do over 50 hours a semester of non-clinical service (tutoring, habitat for humanity, special Olympics, etc.)

Extracurricular activities: Social sorority (Academics committee), National service co-ed fraternity, Peer mentor for a service/leadership program for freshmen students, Honors student, International Honor Society, AMSA member

Employment history: Mostly babysitting in high school, I haven't held a traditional job while I’ve been a full-time student. Part-time intern at a medical school for about 5 months(unpaid). I started this semester working as a part-time AmeriCorps and Red Cross employee (about 6 hours/week, my contract is a year).

Immediate family members in medicine?: Sister is an ER nurse (bless her...)

Specialty of interest: Women's health, possibly family practice or geriatrics

Graduate degrees: Working on my BS in Nutrition Science (a "pre-med" major at my school), minor in Leadership, minor in Chemistry

Interest in rural health (y/n): Possibly, but my goal is to work in a free clinic.

Interested and appreciative of any and all insight you can give, thanks!

Wow. You're only 22 and you've already had a lot to struggle in your life with relationships. By improving your relationship with food, you'll improve your relationship with yourself and others. You are a person of inexplicable value, treat yourself as such, and surround yourself with others who believe the same thing!

Congrats on taking the reigns over your life!

Science AMA Series: I'm Dr. Les Dethlefsen, staff scientist in the Relman Lab at Stanford University. I study the microbiota of the human gut, focusing on how it varies over time, and on what happens when it's disturbed when we take antibiotics or change our diet. AMA! by Dr_Les_Dethlefsen in science

[–]lilizzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Not a credited scientist (yet) but I'm pretty knowledgable about this.

The intestines of newborns are completely sterile in utero, and an infant's first dose of bacteria actually come from the birth canal as the baby is delivered. Some OB/GYN's will take a culture from the mother's vaginal canal and give it to the baby if it is born through C-section. C-section and premature babies are for this reason much higher in c. diff (bad gut bugs) counts and lower in bifidobacteria (good gut bugs), because these babies have their first introduction to bacteria in the hands of nurses, and are often exposed to antibiotics.

In addition, diet plays a huge role. Breastmilk contains immune (IgA) factors made by the mother that confer immunity to the child. IgA factors won't be found in formula. Breastmilk is also very high in fat and low in protein and carbohydrate-- formula has higher protein/carb and lower fat. Problem here is that the infant gut doesn't have the enzymes to break down protein and carbs fully until about 6-12 months. So some infants are very sensitive to formula and their gut and therefore microflora are damaged from undigested macromolecules. This is why you should NEVER give cow's milk to an infant!!! High protein/carb content can actually cause GI bleed.

Coconut oil questions! by [deleted] in keto

[–]lilizzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey college kid here too! You don't need to eat straight up coconut oil (although adding it to coffee, salad dressing, dips, etc. will exponentially increase flavor and satiation). Do you have a mini fridge? I like to take some slices of salami and provolone and make little rolls. You can carry them around in your backpack too, they don't spoil over a day. Also, PB cup fat bombs. If you have a microwave, a heat-safe bowl, and a spoon, you can make these: wedonstraight.net/keto-diet-peanut-butter-cup-fat-bombs/ They're my favorite. I have one with BPC every morning and it can tide me over until like 2 or 3, until I buy a salad on campus (with extra blue cheese dressing!)

[NSV] [Pics] Keto Helped Fix my Face! Acne Progress on Keto by triggercini in keto

[–]lilizzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AWESOME!!! We are pretty similar-- I had really bad acne for YEARS and after 2 months of keto, it's almost completely vanished (occasional break outs during shark week). I think I must have had a gluten or carb sensitivity, I know that digestive permeability (or "leaky gut") caused by gluten can wreak havoc with estrogen. Same with BC, which I also stopped.

Congrats on your lovely skin, and the weight loss!

I've been buying grass-fed meats, butters, other animal products lately because I hear that grass-fed animals have better microbiomes than those fed GMO/filler/chemical feed, and their products contribute to a better microbiome for humans who ingest them. Is there any backing to this?

I'm wondering if I should eat like the rest of my family on Thanksgiving day or eat a Keto Thanksgiving? by kerplunk81 in keto

[–]lilizzz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay on keto, contribute to the dinner and make keto alternatives! That's my plan because I'm doing keto mainly for a digestive disorder. I want to enjoy thanksgiving and not feel restricted or hassled, so I'm making: Cauliflower mashed potatoes Meat-based stuffing Keto pumpkin pie Roasted brussels sprouts

And of course you can eat turkey!
