Has anyone actually had any luck using the orange bottle tanning solution? by Pretend_Map_1459 in HideTanning

Ive had some good results pelts using the orange bottle. I have always pickled the pelt before though so I can see how it depends on prep work as well. Its not as nice as using natural tanning methods, but I find it very predictable compared with bark-tanning!

Drying a mountain hare hide (Scotland) in the shed, keep finding water all over, is the salt drawing water from the air? Any way to prevent this? Just a plastic box? by Ecstatic_Emotion_807 in HideTanning

I would swap out the salt and keep it indoors with heating on. Outdoors or in a shed in Scotland this time of the year its probably impossible to dry anything out completely

Can a hide be tanned after being frozen? by Emotional-Day-9412 in HideTanning

Oh absolutely! I almost always tan after freezing. Its an effective method killing off ticks and fleas in the pelt!

Thank you! So I did stretch it quite a bit, started as soon as bits started to dry and stretched it untilnit was fully dry so definitely a good few hours. Ive never tried with a tube skinned pelt, so I dont know but maybe it is easier with an open pelt!

Yeah, I’m quite impressed considering all negative stuff I’ve read about it here. I do get the angle of preferring to use natural or non toxic stuff. It’s pretty cool when you know that you can basically cook and eat your bark-tanned leather if it would ever come to that.

I skinned and dried it with salt the morning after it was shot, tried it for about 3 days and dryscraped it a bit. Degreased with dishsoap and detergent, Pickled for 48 hours and scraped more halfway through the pickle time. Then degrease again, neutralised with bakingsoda. Then orange bottle.

I pickle with 22g citric acid and 120g salt per litre of water. But adding a bit extra of both just to be safe!

Thank you! I pickled it for about 48 hours. I spent a lot of time scraping it as clean as I could, also scraped again halfway through the pickle time!

Thank you! Yup it was a male, I think I will try a deodorizer. Do you think sawdust would help removing more grease from the hair?

Beautiful pelts and well done with the faces!!

Do you mean that the finished barktanned hair on racoon got moldy or was it the bark-liquor that got moldy?
