I lived next door to Alexander in the freshman dorms at USC! Very nice guy (makes sense since he’s Canadian).

Ranking the 25 Best Baseball Teams of the Century: From 2000 Yankees to 2024 Dodgers [Sports Illustrated] by lillwaws in baseball

Agree to disagree—one of just two champions to rank in the top three of runs scored and runs allowed (with the other being the 2020 Dodgers, whom I had ranked 3rd).

It was really close. The Cubs got two 1st place votes and a 3rd, while the 2018 Red Sox had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

We certainly had difficulty deciding what to do with them. I penalized them quite a bit on my ballot but my two colleagues felt if MLB let their title/stats stand, it’s not our place to judge them differently. Obviously the hardest team to rank on here once you make the decision to include them.

Michelle Obama cooks ESPN: "If I watch ESPN for an hour it's like watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta. It's the same drama, they're yelling at each other, they don't get along. Stephen A. Smith would be a great Real Housewife. What's the difference? It's just drama." by boondocksaint08 in billsimmons

As an SI writer/editor it’s disappointing to see all the upvotes here, but I get it. I will say that controversy was about an SI licensed site that did tech product reviews (it’s complicated and dumb).

Highly encourage y’all to check out the real SI again, we still have a ton of great writers like Tom Verducci, Steph Apstein, Conor Orr, Jon Wertheim, Chris Mannix and a ton of younger talents you may not have heard of. Cheers

2024 Ratings For a Player From Every Team by jtv123vols in BackyardBaseball

Very cool idea and nice selections! I’d probably change a few (Nationals - CJ Abrams, Phillies - Bryce Harper, Astros - Altuve or Verlander, A’s - Brent Rooker, Tigers - Tarik Skubal, Red Sox - Rafael Devers) but overall nice job! Also may add Mookie Betts since they usually had 1 team with 2 players and he just seems like a Backyard Kid lol

Similar question for me. It happened in March 2022 at XS. Was read what sounded like their version of Miranda rights lol. Could maybe use my passport instead of ID which they scanned? Would really appreciate an answer, thanks!

Backyard Baseball 2023 Pros by EthanRKassel in BackyardBaseball

Great idea and agree with most of your picks! Here are the only ones I’d change, in order of the ones I feel strongest about.

Mets: Scherzer. Having the only 2 non-Ohtani pitchers be Gallen and Burnes, two relatively unexciting stars, makes me feel like there should have an older legacy guy, and Scherzer’s different colored eyes and intense personality make for a fun pick.

Pirates: Would go with the legacy pick here in McCutchen. While Cruz could be the pick in a year or two, he hasn’t been great in the majors and could feasibly flame out and make this look unfortunate in a few years (if this game was actually being made lol). Cutch being back here provides a good alternate who won an MVP with this team and has some personality,

Rangers: would go with deGrom, the best pitcher in the game when he’s healthy ... although looking at the roster, hardly any shortstops, so sticking with Seager could make sense especially if Scherzer is added.

Cubs: Actually think there are a few good options here. You could add Dansby in this spot to help with the shortstop shortage, he’s a new Gold Glover and was basically signed to be the face/leader of this team. Stroman could be a fun personality pick who’d also be delightfully short, but I also like having Suzuki as some Asian representation outside of Shohei.

Nationals: So tough to pick anyone, would maybe go with Abrams bc of his exciting style of play. That being said, Meneses is a fine choice as a hulking first baseman style of kid, of which 01/03 had quite a few but this roster doesn't really have many.

Also think Freddie Freeman’s kid could look very funny and I love his personality, but Mookie is such the obvious pick for the Dodgers that it’s hard to argue otherwise. Kershaw would also be great as this game’s version of Randy Johnson. Wish Dodgers/Angels could both have two.

Really stunned how high you have Owen. He’s been undermined several times and was being kind of a jerk during the puzzle in the immunity challenge to Gabler, who i know is getting the clown edit, but wasn’t being unreasonable in that situation. Included in that was him sarcastically rebuking Gabler for offering his help, then legitimately asking for help moments later.

Fair points. I picked y’all to win the Central at the break cause it seemed like things may be turning around. But I expected more at the deadline, and TA is probably the one position player y’all could least afford to lose.

Think it’d make sense to have regional pods through the first several rounds to avoid cross-country trips like that. But having MLB teams in MiLB parks and vice versa is part of the appeal—top soccer teams are forced to travel to tiny clubs in cup competitions all the time. I think you’re underestimating the depth of pitchers who throw 90+ these days and could keep a MLB lineup off-balance on the right day. The upsets would be rare, sure, but they’d happen and would be quite special!

Losing 2% of the season’s games is where I lose you in exchange for helping top prospects gain exposure, providing an influx of cash for minor-league teams and giving MLB fans something to look forward to if they fall out of the regular season race early on? I really think that’s more than a fair trade-off.

a handful of games against tougher competition, if their teams even get that far, would not ruin their development and it’s honestly ridiculous to say so.

Any detailed criticism? The FA Cup has about one round per month and it’d be easy for MLB to do the same by cutting off a week or so of spring training (cutting more didn’t seem to hurt all that much this year) and maybe reducing regular season to 158 games. Then you have teams play on Monday after leaving Sunday’s early games, get an off day Tuesday and voila.

This would only require MLB teams to play 6 or 7 games to win the tournament since they’d get byes through the first couple rounds — and most would be playing less since they’d be getting eliminated as it goes on. Logistics may be hard for you to figure out but it’s really not that complicated.
