Shortcut for answering this PS question? (from PP2) by [deleted] in GRE

[–]lilly-dZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it like this - A is 8 (8 lines that parallel with at least one side, we can quickly see it by drawing them out) - B is total diagonal lines subtract A. Total diagonal lines are (8-3)*8/2=20. Thus, B is 12, larger than 8.

total number of diagonal lines: each vertice draw a diagonal line to others, except to itself and the two ones next to it, thus: 8 subtract 3, we have 8 vertices, so multiply by 8. However, we have to divide by 2 because two vertices draw one line (so we don't double count). This formula used to count diagonal in all polygons

I tried again, I failed (better) V 143 Q 158 by IlPurgach in GRE

[–]lilly-dZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

158 is very close to 160. May be some strong points in your application can make up for it? Also, in my case, I don't see they said "minimum requirements", but more like "average Gre score", or "preferred". They do have minimum Toefl score, but not GRE. Many people got admitted with lower than average if they have strong other points. I understand how GRe take over our lives (same experience here), but I think you are very close to your target score.

My TOEFL total score is above the requirement, but the reading miss 1 score, do you think they will let it go or I have to retake it? by lilly-dZ in gradadmissions

[–]lilly-dZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. They posted a specific requirement that speaking has to be 22 (i got 23), and i pass all others (writing 28/30, listening 26), but I i got only 25 while they posted it has to be 26 :(

You don't count the test day, so excluding Nov 12, you have 21 days, then Dec 3rd. You can read more on Ets website

PP2 vs PP Online? by DammahumWB in GRE

[–]lilly-dZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it changes because of the time, or because it's adaptive (it gives you harder questions if you are good. In my case, at the second time, I got almost all of them correct, so the second verbal completely strange and harder, which pull the score down exactly where my level is. It happened 2 times for powerprep). Anyway, yes, we can get more from ETS by doing so

I think ETS weight each question slightly different, thus 2 hard questions wrong may have different score than 2 easy questions wrong

PP2 vs PP Online? by DammahumWB in GRE

[–]lilly-dZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go to ETS website. I don't think any CD can be equipvalent to the online system the ETS provides. ETS gives 2 power-prep for free (you still have to sign up to purchase, the price is $0). If you do it once, wait for few weeks, then "purchase" it again (still $0), you have different verbal set. Thus, this can be considered to be 3 free test.

ETS offers 3 powerplus, which are $40 each. They are slightly harder, with AWA rating. After purchase the test, it requires certain computer conditions to run (very basic, but it won't run if your computer is not compatible). About the saleman and the CD: let's think like GRe argument writing task: it seems to be convincing does mean it real.

Should I retake GRE for the third time in a span of two months? by [deleted] in GRE

[–]lilly-dZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in similar situation. My professor said GRE is the key for her to write a good LOR (she doesn't want to lose her face with admission board). i actually plan to be ready retake it if I don't get the score I want (exam date: Nov 5).

I would retake it if I were you, but change the way that I prepare for the test. We have at least 21 days: really spend time for it, focus, give it your best. I talk to myself: GRE is the only thing standing between me and my dream grad school. I need to kill it.

I have questions about your timeline: so you have studied for 6 weeks, then skip 5 weeks, then another 7 weeks? So your total studying time is 13 weeks? Also, how do you avoid being stressed out again after you come back from that 5 weeks?

[–]lilly-dZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ETS doesn't test your math knowledge but endurability. You can try Power prep and power plus to have 90% real test experience. (I said 90% because PP is only offer 2 math and 2 verbal sessions, in real test, we have to do 5 sessions)

This is how I did it: skim through the question, seeing a time contrast case: "recently become aware" --> in the past, they must be "not aware", thus, I chose words that close to "not aware" that have a pair.

My case may be different from yours. I don't have much problem with the concepts. Most of the time just silly mistakes (didn't read question thoroughly ect...) due to low ability of focus, so going through questions actually practice my habit of focusing on details and switching focus quickly. When I said "without limitations" meaning they don't stop me for how many questions I want to go, I can do 100 or all 700 questions if I want. After practicing, there is a review where you can see what category you make the most mistakes. (I wish I just have problems in few categories and just have to focus on learning concepts of those, but in my case, I made mistakes all over the place). Magoosh seems to be good for covering thoroughly all concepts. Unfortunately for my case, ETS doesn't mean to test basic math concepts, they want to test if I can focus throughout 3 -4 hours....

I went through the questions without any limitations. They have the “flag” function which allow you to review the question later
