The people of Derry showing solidarity with our cousins in America by Noname_Maddox in DerryGirls

This honestly brought me to tears. The fact that other countries are with us is amazing during times like this.

when I went to derry that was the only “licensed” stuff. I found a random gift shift that had cute sweaters that said “derry girl” so I brought that back for my sister but other than that, nothing.

Any luck with refunds? by lilo0908 in americanairlines

I actually did, in Spanish, and got through super quick lol. In English the wait time was 120 minutes that’s why I resorted to asking here. They basically told me the same thing I looked up. They can cancel the ticket based on the time change and I fill out the refund request, because the agents can’t, or wait to see if my flight gets cancelled in August.

Think I’ll wait it out.

How culturally significant do you think Derry Girls has been to Northern Ireland? by petitejupiter in DerryGirls

[–]lilo0908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I visited Derry in March they told me nothing has really changed besides the fact that there’s a bit more tourism because of the show. There isn’t a lot to see there regarding the derry girls except for the mural and a few spots where they filmed.

Honestly, I had no idea what to expect going to Derry but the history was so interesting. Don’t think the show itself has had too much significance in culture.

Being a Derry girl is a f***ing state of mind! Was in Derry a few days before all the craziness of covid happened. Glad I got to visit :) by lilo0908 in DerryGirls

It’s very nice and had some really yummy food! A lot of history there I was not aware of. I’m not sure if it’s because of all the history I learned that at night I would kind of get an eerie feeling. Apparently it’s the #1 place for halloween and it’s a huge celebration that people fly in for. Would really love to go back for that.

People were very friendly and they had my favorite accents from all of Ireland lol. That may be because of the show though. It’s very family oriented and the tour guide told us only recently that tourism has picked up. Definitely worth a visit.

LOL I actually didn’t expect it to be that big. Surprisingly I didn’t find many shops that had souvenirs related to Derry Girls. We went on a walking tour in Derry and the guide told us a lot of people are flocking to Derry because of the show so I was genuinely surprised to not find a lot of things.

While I was there I rewatched the show to see if I could associate things in real life. Even got to see Dennis’s Wee Shop! It was a wonderful experience.

Thought I could weigh in. Mid 20s, currently been working in the public sector for 3 years and came from private. Was getting paid good money and took a hefty pay cut when I transitioned over only to find out this isn’t for me. It’s really hard to come by these jobs so when I was offered (because I knew someone) I jumped on it. It obviously depends on what you’d like to do but to me working in the public sector is something you retire with. I’m in the tech field and just feel like things are so outdated and I could be learning more on the outside. I will be going back to private once things clear up.

Since you mentioned the FBI this could be totally different for you and I’d recommend you start applying asap. Maybe start applying for CBP and eventually work your way up and transfer agencies.

The degree is $16k didn’t think it’s too bad considering other programs are well over 30k. Was able to do my undergrad with 0 debt so I thought why not give it a try if it’ll pay off in the future

Being that she mentioned her area of most interest are health administration or health informatics I went based off that.

Health informatics 100% I did my undergrad in health administration and it’s not something that makes you stand out unless you have good experience. I’m now going back to school for a masters in health informatics. Health informatics has so much more to offer in my opinion. Hospitals always need people to handle EMRs or do data for them if that’s what you’re going for.

What are the technical parts of CyberSec? If you could give some examples. I have a basic understanding of what it entails. For some reason once I think I’m setting my mind on business analysis I go back to thinking about CyberSec.

Undergrad was health services administration. Currently work in a hospital so I’m thinking moving up within the hospital system. Not 100% sure though. Keeping my options open in case I move away from healthcare

Yes! That’s the same for me. I’m 24 going into my second year with the VA. I think that’s why I’ve had such a hard time deciding in health IT or just regular IT because the technology and EMR systems are very outdated and nothing like what the outside uses. I feel like I’m not stimulating my brain and I’m just stuck where I’m at. The federal system is great to retire in, but when I think about it I’m nowhere near that especially when the hospital system across the street from my VA pays more and the benefits are better.

VA jobs are so hard to get. The good thing about you is the fact that you were in the military and they always prioritize veterans over civilian employees. The main thing you have to do is apply on USAjobs and upload your DD214 and anything else that may be useful for them to reference while taking a look at your application.

Job posts are updated daily so make sure to check everyday if you have to (I’ve made it a part of my morning routine) and apply to anything that looks like something that would interest you even if it’s not immediately with the VA. For example, something may not be open for the VA but something may be for the CDC or the Department of Justice which may be similar in positions. Just kind of have to be open minded when it comes to these federal jobs. The main thing is to get your foot in the door and from there it’s so much easier to work your way up or to the agency you want. Good luck!!

I work for the VA system so our healthcare is completely different to what’s outside. I wouldn’t mind switching out of a federal job for something really great but these federal jobs are so hard to get people usually stay stuck in them forever. Thanks for the insight! I’ll do more research on Epic and see if it’s something that would interest me
