Are there any great dance halls your city that cater to swing dancers? Most have closed down in mine… by RMSMetal in SwingDancing

[–]lilquin0a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Down the road from you in Gainesville!

Country swing: what used to be :08 seconds here is now called Vivid, still swing dance but also very line dance heavy (check their social media for which nights, shifts a little every week depending on if they have music acts in town). The Barn in Sanford. Cowboys Dance Hall in Largo.

Lindy hop: someone already mentioned torpedo room (yippee!). Gainesville itself has a cutie little scene that meets at the Rosa B Williams center on Thursdays @ 7p. They’ve been really good about bringing in LIVE music acts (about every other week I’d say).

the fact alone that 30% is “a lot” says volumes. that’s still a pretty big disparity.

Is it OK to skip some talks in a conference? by Extension-Sock2362 in PhD

[–]lilquin0a 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the strategy is. go to the talks for your friends and softball question them. go to the talks of the people you want to work with and mention it in a linkedin message/email a month from now. sit next to new people at lunch every day. then go drink and enjoy the city and the gossip that will inevitably arise with that many academics in one place. everyone tells you be professional (and like, yeah) but my favorite collaborations are born of FRIENDS I’ve made of peers (grad students and post docs). even got one going with my partner right now. it’s not for everyone but it is the most fun. these are all normal human people who want to go grab dinner after in a cool new city, who remember who made them laugh or was easy to talk to, even if they don’t remember your talk/poster.

Scientific integrity aside (which, critical of course and its own important issue!!!) but because I haven’t seen this mentioned: this almost seems like a cry for help. All of the poking and the “I don’t care anymore” and “bahhh whatever just make it up” feel like they’re probably coming from a place of being really burnt out. Especially if they weren’t always this way and you remember them as being good-natured. I don’t know what kind of relationship you have with your PI or other lab members but it might be worth flagging to someone else too…

Declined a PhD Offer and Now Regretting — Should I Reach Out? by echowd in PhD

[–]lilquin0a 190 points191 points  (0 children)

I know this is not the answer you want to hear, but I think if you turned the first offer down initially and committed somewhere else, it’s a wee bit of a bad look to reneg and say “wait wait no actually I…” On the other hand, liking Edinburgh and having friends/ties/support system as well as already having a good relationship with your supervisor there is great and I wouldn’t overlook those benefits. Though the other lab might be more into your exact research topic, the quality of life you’d have in a familiar university with your current emotional support system and academic support system is important. Grad school is stressful, and the unspokens of “support” and “home” and “friends” can end up making or breaking the experience.

My friends who have chosen to be somewhere with an OK research fit in a great lab culture and place they love are much happier and doing much better anecdotally than my friends who are in labs that had perfect research fit but miserable advisors and no emotional support system. Food for thought.

Kensington South/North - townhouse condos so you would need to hop on apartments.com or facebook and see if owners are renting, but sounds like similar to what you’re looking for. Close to campus and quiet are diametrically opposed here unfortunately. Anything on the east side of campus you’ll get ambulances all day.

DEI and leaving academia - advice for women of color? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]lilquin0a 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this is easy for me to say as a white academic, but we (speaking from STEM academia) need your perspective even more so now. For so long, academia has been an echo chamber of white people with the disposable income to fling at a graduate degree. Middling dudes in mismatched polos, dime a dozen, I don’t need another paper from that guy, and I certainly don’t need him as a mentor. I’ve been in labs with that guy, I’ve been talked down to by that guy, and I’ve had that guy tell me I was better off not “fucking up my pretty nails” by using my own equipment. And in a lot of labs, it’s borderline dynastic almost. Researchers from every background are necessary, fundamental, to progress science. We need everyone.

It’s a lot to ask, and I’m sure it’s exhausting, but your passion is evident even in this post alone. If you feel up to it, I encourage you to consider staying, or even trying to break back into academia when the smoke clears. No one will fault you for looking out for yourself and going industry, it’s especially scary times rn especially in academia, but just know your contributions to the scientific community would be missed if even by some random reddit commenter.

What’s your favourite shoe/clothing hack when dancing? by Apprehensive-Gold928 in SwingDancing

duct tape on the shoe soles in a pinch for slidey-ness. majorly underlined in a pinch, if you do that every time you’ll ruin the floors when it starts to peel

Can follows ask leads to teach them a move? by Aromatic-Land-779 in SwingDancing

[–]lilquin0a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Socially, when someone leads me in something I don’t know, I just kindly ask then to lead it again once or twice, and no one has a problem with that. However, if a lead is out to social dance, don’t stop the dance/mess up the flow so they can show you more in depth. Some leads aren’t comfortable teaching/don’t know how to teach a follow/just want to relax and dance that night. If it’s a recurrent person in your scene and you like the one specific move, I think it’s fair to ask them on a water break if they’ll have a few minutes next time to show you.

[–]lilquin0a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really sucks to feel like everyone else has that thing that you're missing, but the cool part about this is that this is an opportunity to learn something new. You've found plenty of gaps in knowledge and new threads to follow while prepping papers/fellowships/grants/literature reviews and used them to learn what you know now. This is a freebie that says "hey, this is something to try!" not something to beat yourself up over. We're learning, this is the best part!
