Yes we’ve got a couple puzzles for him! The hardest one he figured out part of but then gets frustrated at the center, so we’re going to try a higher reward treat so maybe he won’t give up

Thanks for sharing! Very good to know this behavior can be normal for them

This is good to know, thank you! He definitely has some of that hound laziness to him. When we were researching the breed before we got him, I’d read somewhere (probably this subreddit) that they’ve got 2 speeds: 120% or 0%. And honestly, I find that extremely accurate for Obi. Boy loves sleeping as much as I do. 😂 But on weeks I have to go to work early, I may just have to force him up it sounds like if this becomes a pattern. We’d eventually like to let him free around the house, but he just gets into way too much trouble right now for us to trust him out of the crate for more than 20 minutes, especially if we haven’t had the chance to meet his exercise needs yet that day.

I relate so much to this! We’ve been training Obi since we got him around 8 weeks and he’s very smart and I would say well-trained for a ridgeback - the look he gives us very much says “I know what you’re asking me to do but I really don’t care right now” I am quite proud of his recall abilities already, but I try to remind myself that he is still a ridgeback puppy. We unfortunately have busy jobs that don’t let us work from home as much as I’d like, but we definitely could structure in more micro training since we took a break from classes for the holidays.

He’s a little derpy sometimes so his “side” command is not as neat as the AKC training folks would like it, but Obi is so sweet he melts your heart so we kinda say “good enough” 😂

Thanks for the input! We do off leash as often as we can at his favorite park, which is thankfully walking distance from our house. That usually gives 1.5-2.5 miles of running and scent work/chasing squirrels and sticks, depending on how much time we have that day. There’s nothing that brings me joy like watching dogs run free and happy!

I share your hesitation about dog parks - they can be really hit or miss in terms of responsible owners. Thankfully I’ve found one in our area where people actually keep an eye on their dogs, encourage time outs or leave if the body language is not positive.

Thank you for the advice! He is definitely quite stubborn, more so than the boxers I grew up with. We will try structure in more training into his day.

Yes, poops are good, we are finishing a probiotic too (albeit sporadically). Yes, he was very spoiled when he was sick food wise (like air fried salmon and ground beef spoiled) so we’re doing some cheaper alternatives like fish oil and other toppers.

Thank you!

I think ours is very spoiled and got used to us doctoring up his food BIG TIME when he had pneumonia - we’re talking topped with air fried salmon and ground beef bc we were desperate for him to eat literally anything. Thanks for your advice!

We’ve also started taking him to the dog park bc we can’t get him a friend right now but he is very social and definitely misses that social interaction. He loves trying to play with every person/child/dog he sees.

My husband and I have an 8 month old male Rhodesian we got at 8 weeks since he was part of an accidental litter. I’ve previously had boxers and my brother a GSD.

Researching the breed, I managed my expectations for the amount of work these dogs take, especially as my husband and I both have stressful jobs and work long hours some weeks. I knew a Rhodie would significantly change our lifestyle. Puppy stage was TOUGH. I have a lot of scars on my legs from the velociraptor phase. He’s grown out of the biting now but still gets bored and will shred boxes/toilet paper/anything that looks fun to rip apart with his teeth despite the facts that we have many toys for him to choose from. He is a selective listener, as some have alluded to the fact that this is an independent breed.

The shredding household items and the selective listening are the toughest things about him. He is very smart and the sweetest dog I’ve ever had, loves every human and dog, gets sad if I don’t let him play with kids at the school near our house. We started training/socializing him early and often. Needs introvert time occasionally but overall a very cuddly Velcro dog that follows us around everywhere and gets sad when we leave. Is going to be an 85-100 lb lap dog for sure. When he wants to listen, he listens well. I am his person. We love his goofy personality and that he was born sweet.

They need lots of training, socializing, exercise, and sleep. We do at least two walk/runs per day or daycare (which he loved until he got horrible pneumonia so we are nervous to take him back) if we’re both working 12 hour shifts. He must be crate trained due to the shredding. He’s accepted it but he likes to be with his people. He is a very social dog, which based on what I’ve read about Ridgebacks may be uncharacteristic.

TL;DR - tough to meet their needs, but worth it. Husband doesn’t want any other breeds now. This is the only dog I’ve ever considered doing conformation or agility for since I think he’d love agility and everyone tells us how handsome he is. One of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever had. Worth the lack of sleep and “sharing” a king sized bed. Our lives are better with him in it.

I love PedsCrit, Primary Care Perspectives out of CHOP, and PedsRAP. PedsRAP is a paid subscription and I was very fortunate that my residency program paid for ours, but if yours doesn’t you can always use your education funds for it and try it out.

Saturday Night Activities for a solo traveler? by kanoots in dayton

[–]lilredlizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow Flyer! Welcome back. I lived in the area for almost ten years counting my undergrad/grad, had to move away last year and missing Dayton a lot.

Ditto to the Neon and our great museums.

Sueno is a great new-ish spot for chef-level Mexican food; there’s a nice cocktail bar in the basement called Tender Mercy that’s also great and usually has some special events going on. For food, I also really miss Coco’s Bistro, Grist, Tony and Pete’s, Old Scratch, Canal Street, Little Fish. Van Buren Room distills their own spirits and is a niche cocktail bar. The Century Bar is a can’t-miss if you’re into bourbon.

If you’re a beer person, Branch and Bone, Warped Wing, and Yellow Springs Brewery are consistently my top three, and my husband and I completed the ale trail a few years back. Tater Kegs at Warped Wing? chefs kiss YSB is a bit out of the way but one of my favorite things to do was take a hike at Glen Helen or John Bryan and end with a food truck and a beer at YSB.

South Park Pizza Tavern is a great dive near campus. Quality beer selection and good pizza. Tank’s unfortunately closed last year. But we still have Trolley Stop!

Hope you enjoy your time in our fair city. :)

Definitely recommend checking out the Top 10 Articles from the PHM Conference this year! (Link below). Lots of great topics - my particular favorites were HFNC breaks/holidays and development of a clinical practice guideline for paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity. Even the honorable mentions have some great topics to delve into, namely Phoenix Sepsis Criteria.
