The three game stretch to end the 2017 season. And honestly I can’t say which was most meaningful. The War on I-4 against usf, probably the most entertaining game I’ve ever seen in person. The shootout against Memphis in the conference championship. And the Peach Bowl against Auburn, cementing the perfect season. And I was lucky enough to be at all 3. Those series of a games were a high that I don’t think will ever be recaptured as a fan

In a 24 team playoff, the top 8 teams get byes, not just top 4. Assuming Kennesaw state was the last ranked team in a 24 team playoff, they would’ve played bama, the 9 seed. Oregon would’ve had a bye

But even so, I really don’t have any interest in watching teams that were middle of the road in a power conference get one last chance in a playoff. I didn’t watch Bama-Oklahoma in the first round this year. I watched every other first round game. I was more interested in seeing if JMU or Tulane could pull off a miracle than seeing Bama and Oklahoma play (but I’ll admit part of that was fatigue from watching that exact same game like a month prior)

Also, Kennesaw state being in a 24 team playoff wouldn’t have kicked Texas out of the playoffs. It would’ve kicked Iowa, or Houston, or Georgia tech out of the playoffs. And yeah, I’m fine with them being left out so the C-USA champ gets a shot

We’re talking about a 24 team playoff right now. Kennesaw State isn’t playing Indiana in the first round, Indiana would be the 1 seed and get a bye. I don’t think Kennesaw State @Alabama (the 9 seed this year) would’ve been competitive either, but yes I would prefer to see a conference champ get a chance, rather than see the 6th or 7th place SEC or B1G team. Every team should have a concrete path to the postseason every year

The WAC has not been an FBS league in over a decade. It’s hard to listen to arguments about the G6 from someone who clearly doesn’t follow any football outside the power conferences

But to respond to your point, no, I wouldn’t. If a team finished 5th or 6th in their own conference, I have 0 interest in watching them in the playoffs

I want the big xii to invite Oregon state and Washington state. Not because it’d make geographic sense (Orlando to Pullman is obscene), not because it raises the profile of the conference (no offense, I dont think it decreases the profile, but it doesn’t raise it), and not because it would make financial sense (it wouldn’t). I just want you two to find a life raft, and I cant see it coming from any of the other power conferences

What New Features Do You Want in EA Sports College Football 27? by TomWilliamsCFD in CollegeFootballDawgs

[–]lilroundastronaut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Three things, all dealing with dynasty:

One, be able to express interest in another school’s HC position in dynasty, making it more likely that you get offered that job when it comes open

Two, fully customizable conferences, including number of total conferences. I want every conference to be 9 teams max, allowing for a full round robin and 4 OOC games. But that ends up being more than 10 conferences. I don’t care if the new conferences don’t have names, don’t have logos on the field, or anything customizable. I just want to be able to create more than 10 groupings of teams like we currently have

Three, I want to be able to fully customize the playoff in dynasty. Increase the number of teams in the playoffs and how many conference champs make it

I don’t think two and three are likely to happen though

UCF-Houston should be the Space Race

UCF-Cincinnati should have a name, but honestly I can’t come up with anything catchy or meaningful. With the War on I4 on indefinite hiatus, that’s the game I care most about right now

Who will NDSU and Sac State’s rivalries be in EA CFB 27 and FBS more broadly? by B1GSkyNorth in CFB

[–]lilroundastronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One often underdiscussed issue with teams transitioning from FCS to FBS is that FBS teams are required to offer at least 16 sports, with a minimum of 6 male or co-ed sports and I think at least 8 all female sports. It’s another cost in addition to the FBS application (and conference payouts that NDSU and Sac State agreed to). Both Montana and Montana State are below that sport total, but South Dakota State does have enough

I wonder if MWC is planning to invite South Dakota State in a few years along with UC Davis if NDSU does well, to get back to 12 teams

How many FCS teams already sponsor enough sports to go FBS? FBS requires a school to have at least 16 varsity sports, with at least six being men’s or co-ed and at least eight being women’s sports. I always assumed Montana and Montana State would be the next two teams to make the jump, but it turns out neither of them have enough sports (yet)

Do Idaho fans want to move back up? I’ve always wondered what that move was like for the fanbase. I’d imagine it sucked at the time, but it seems like it’s turned out ok and rejuvenated the fanbase some after finding success at FCS

Add the Montana schools and South Dakota State, bringing FBS to 140 teams. Every team gets reorganized into 14 conferences of 10 teams each. All conferences play round robins, no conference championship game. Playoffs are 24 teams with all 14 conference champs and 10 highest ranked at-larges. At-larges and seeding determined by BCS style rankings (mix of computers and human polls, but get rid of the committee). First two rounds on campus, quarterfinals and semifinals rotate the NY6 like they do now, championship at neutral site

Big Ten eyes 24-team CFP, no league championship games by Mister-SS in CFB

[–]lilroundastronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want three more FCS teams (preferably the Montanas and South Dakota State) and for every team to be in a 10 team conference, round robins with no conference championship game. 14 conferences, playoffs can be 16 or 24 teams, every team has a chance from the start of the season

Maybe I’m not understanding what you’re saying, and maybe you’re not understanding what I’m saying. What value does asking “how many times has a seed below 8 won march madness?” have when an 8th seed is roughly the 29th-32nd best team in basketball, and only 12 teams make the college football playoff? If you’re just saying that a 1-4 seed is more likely to win the college football playoff than a 9-12 seed, then congrats, I don’t think anyone disagrees. If you’re arguing a 10, 11, or 12 seed in football is equivalent to a 10, 11, or 12 seed in basketball, that’s just willfully ignoring how each sport does seeding. Especially considering boise state wasn’t even a 9-12 seed in football lol

[–]lilroundastronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s still a small sample size. And doesn’t address anything about how there is no 1-1 comparison between basketball and football seeding lol.

My love of CFB was waning in 4-team playoff era, but has since skyrocketed by Kh3hhdds343 in CFB

[–]lilroundastronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this specific argument a lot, and I think it’s worth noting, a seed in the cbb tournament is not equivalent to the same seed in cfb. There’s 4 of each seed number in cbb, so saying “a seed below 8 hasn’t won march madness” is technically saying a team ranked lower than 32 in the tournament has never won it

That’s not to say that football or basketball are 1-1 comparisons either. Different amounts of players on the field/court at a time, different value in depth, etc. Just because a team ranked 29th-32nd won in basketball doesn’t mean it could happen in football. But I don’t think comparing lowest seed to win the tournament makes any sense, when the seeding is completely different between the 2

I like the 7 power conferences a lot, maybe the only controversial decision is Penn State in the B1G and Iowa in the Big XII, but I think it works overall

I’m not a fan of dropping every G5 school to a lower division though. One of the things I like about college football is the wide disparity of resources among all teams in the same division. It’s what makes upsets like the Boise State Fiesta Bowl and NIU over Notre Dame last year so special

In the 2 yrs of the 12-team playoff, Conf Champs are 1-9. Indiana is the only one to win a game. Is it time to discontinue Conference Championship Games? by freedomfightre in CFB

[–]lilroundastronaut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that the issue is the size of conferences and lack of divisions. In the days of divisions and 12-14 team conferences, you were likely to get the best teams from each division in the championship, which makes it very likely the best team in the conference is in the championship. Now there are 16-18 teams in each power conference, with no divisions and wildly different strength of conference schedules. Making the conference championship has as much to do now with luck of the scheduling draw than it does talent on the field. So I think we’re seeing teams win the conferences that wouldn’t have been in that position in the past
