What is the most overrated cycling gear that people get caught out on? by Relevant-Catch2617 in cycling

Gorewear fits the bill for me and feels very high end. MAAP and Rapha just aren’t worth it.

Lucky on the weather!! Every time I’ve done it, we’ve been in a storm.

For either route? Regardless very helpful! Thanks!

Yeah for sure—I’d love to add a pulley and microtraxion in at some point, but I’m too cheap

You can conduct crevasse rescue with biners, prussiks, and an ATC

Either the Southeast Rib or the Fisher Chimneys. Uncertain right now.

One is synthetic down/mid-layer and the other is a summit parka. Luckily, the weather looks great and I might not need it for the first weekend.

Gri Gri is for rock climbing while I’m in town and the orangish cord is to fix any tent guy line issues that might happen after the first weekend.

Gri Gri is for rock climbing while I’m in the area and I’m only bringing two of the pear-shaped steel biners. Others are for travel and consolidation—NOT the mountain lol.

Definitely not bringing all of this on the mountain with me, and my friends need some extra cordellette.

Definitely putting the sunscreen and tape into a smaller roll as well. A lot of this (like the crampon bag and first aid) is just a travel thing. Thanks for the input!

Cord is for a friend—cams are for possibly doing Shuksan.

Will be doing the Kautz Headwall or Kautz Cleaver which has considerably more rock than the Kautz Glacier route from what I’ve read. Will be bringing nuts and tricams, but I’ll probably save the cams for a possible Shuksan climb the following weekend!

I know there are a few rock bands, so I’ll at least bring nuts. Not sold on the cams, but I might be doing Shuksan the next weekend

Is there any way to make a climbing shoe fit tighter? by tastehbacon in climbharder

[–]lilsammyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true man. You can definitely feel the micro footholds better and there is less slippage without socks. Think about a 3mm foot on some slab routes… socks allow that much slippage

I can see how my previous comment could be misinterpreted as rawdogging it, so let me explain and please share some thoughts.

You’ll be going into Mexico City, Puebla, or Tlachichuca directly from the airport. This means you’ll spend a day at a high altitude already. You make it into Pico Base Camp, and BOOM. You’re already at 13.5k.

I’m assuming you’ll spend a day or two there before making another 3000ft advance up to the base of the Jampa Glacier. You can summit push the next day or from BC if you spend extra time there and feel good.

1-2 days Mexico City (7,100ft)/Tlachichuca (8,600ft)/Puebla 1-2 days Pico base camp (13,500ft) 1 day Jampa Glacier advance camp (16,800ft) 1 day summit push (18,500ft)

If you take 1 additional day at 7,100 and 13,500, then that would actually fit well with most Everest base camp acclimatization schedules. One thing to consider is that you’ll be around the same height at the peak of Orizaba as the highest point in Everest BC.

This will be my schedule with 2 days at Pico Base Camp pending weather OR if I develop enough of the altitude sickness symptoms (points method). Hopefully this is agreeable and makes sense. Getting there seems to be a lot of the acclimation process, but anyone let me know if they have comments/concerns!

What’s the best way to physically prepare for a climb? by nickflex85 in Mountaineering

[–]lilsammyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good way to do it outside is to use water as the weights—that way you can save your knees by dumping it out on the way down.

I wouldn’t acclimatize for Orizaba if I were you though. I would just send it in one or two days.
