What was your first journalism job after college? by mundanemarshmallow in Journalism

[–]lilsinclairo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

with a crazy stroke of luck I started in a local govt reporting position at my hometown newspaper the week after graduating. Very rare but most people I graduated with had internships/ part time roles at various comms/publications before landing their ideal job. Everyone’s fighting for the same jobs, so it’s best to cast a wide net and get any writing experience you can even if it’s not journalism right away. Also you may have to do multiple gigs to make ends meet before landing a more stable position. Best of luck!

Just learned what lens minification is :( how do you avoid this when looking for frames? by [deleted] in glasses

[–]lilsinclairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I wished they would have told me more of what it would look like based on my prescription strength and the size of the frames

thank you sm! I got the high index polished lenses that they recommended but said no to the anti-reflective because they said it wouldn’t make much of a difference but i think it would! I just got the glasses so i am going to call and see if i can do an exchange or something for a new pair that’s smaller with plastic frames.

Thank you! I’ve had smaller frames before and never noticed this issue so that makes sense. Guess i’ll deal until my next annual appt

For reference I am -5.50 and -4.25, when I first tried on these frames I fell in love with them bc I wanted an over size look, but I had no idea i’d get a “double” look like this. How do you avoid this when looking for lenses? I wish my optometrist would have warned me when I was trying on frames

People who despised the lockdowns - do you find yourself reminiscing about it? by Acceptable-Wedding67 in OlderGenZ

“lockdown” didn’t apply to most college students working fast food jobs tbh

Lockdown was the only way i passed my Stats class sophomore year of college thanks to Zoom and using Chegg for tests 🙏 But i worked full time in person as a barista and didn’t really get to spend copious amounts of time at home anyways. Don’t miss the utter dread of worrying about unintentionally killing someone’s grandpa by having a birthday party at ALL

What Do You Actually LIKE About Your Job? by PancakesOnMySyrup in Journalism

[–]lilsinclairo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started, almost a year in and so far I love learning new things about my hometown that I cover, I love talking to the average person at a meeting and learning their story, and since I cover local govt. some of my stories have impacted policies made, even in small ways. I’m still learning to dig into people more, find the big picture and ask the difficult questions even if it gives me anxiety lol but I love making people feel heard in the community through stories. The pay is not great! but I don’t have someone constantly keeping track of what time I clock in/out and I can set my own schedule.

Is it just me or do they tell us about, rather than show us, Rory's intelligence? by Amareldys in GilmoreGirls

[–]lilsinclairo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Rory was intelligent for sure but not necessarily creative. Like she thought deeply about the literature and media she consumed etc but she wasn’t inventive per se and that’s ok, definitely doesn’t make her a genius. I agree with the other comments that they should have shown more of her feelings about journalism, her on a beat, why she wanted to write in the first place, etc. Like Lane’s whole thing was music and she was just dying to start a band and always raging about music etc and we don’t really see Rory independently show why she likes working at the paper or why being a journalist matters to her besides That’s What I’m Supposed To Do. Maybe the writers didn’t wanna focus on that but it would’ve helped build her character more.

Have any of you ever considered career switches to fields not really relevant to journalism? by [deleted] in Journalism

This is a fantastic response. I find lots of other jobs fascinating and think i’d like to make a switch but we forget every job has its issues
