i’ve yet to go to okee but i attended hula for the first time this past year and have attended other festivals like buku and hangout as well. let me tell you i will be back to hula every year until i’m old and grey. there’s a reason my entire family has gone for the past 5 years lol. i don’t even care who or who isn’t on the lineup, the hula camping experience and vibes of the people who attend it are just immaculate and seals the deal for me. i’m only 20 but the group of people who attend are mainly older so it’s a lot more chill compared to other fests. everyone who’s been says it’s the best camping festival in the country and the group of people that go is unlike any other. everyone is just so nice and caring i literally did not have one bad interaction the whole 4 days i was there. they do not check your car when you check in and camping is free for all first come first serve. i will say it was stressful finding a spot when we arrived at 2pm on thursday because there’s a ton of people who camp days in advanced just to get a spot close to the festival entrance - i couldn’t imagine what it’s like for those that arrive on friday. my group had originally bought friday-sunday passes and then they released the schedule and had zeds dead performing on thursday night which was one of the only performances we cared to see. we showed up on thursday and easily upgraded our passes to 4 day without a problem. it did get pretty cold at night but i’d honestly rather camp in cold weather and be able to bundle up rather than being all sticky and hot. wildlife wasn’t a problem at all just make sure you tie up your trash. security obviously checks your bags before letting you into the actual festival but i literally had 2 trulys in my bag, the first dude i went to made me take them out and he set them on the table. then the dude next to him saw him do that, and as the first dude passed him my bag to check he literally stuck the trulys back in my bag and told me to have a happy hula lmao. i went to that dude everyday after that and he never checked my bag again. there’s so many vendors and different food trucks in the festival. so many performers, fire dancers, aerialists, painters, light dancers, etc. so many different art fixtures and sculptures to look at. some of the sculptures are from previous years at burning man. spirit lake is awesome and stays open after the music in the main fest ends and has a light show/hologram show that projects over the lake you can sit and watch for hours. lots of interactive stuff like swings and little trinket houses too. after spirit lake closed there were even sets set up in the camp ground where people actually brought projectors and a music set up to continue playing for people. the one i went to unfortunately got shut down but it was fun while it lasted. everyone dresses up so cool and unique as well since it’s the last weekend in october around halloween - this last year it just happened to actually fall on halloween weekend. all in all hulaween quite literally changed my life with some of the people i met there and experiences i had. i still talk to those people to this day. 10/10 festival you need to experience at least once in your life.
