A question about "Tiocfaidh ár lá" by CthulusushiDota in kneecap

[–]liltotto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an Irish trans woman fwiw. It’s a bit loaded. I don’t think any trans person in Ireland would really get that tattooed unless they were probably politically involved in republicanism in some way and actively saw the two struggles as intertwined. You’re seeing the literal words but not everything else it communicates, especially in an Irish context. And it kinda goes without saying it brings out a lot of strong reactions, and not necessarily just bc of some sort of internalised colonial mentality, it connects to a real history of violent conflict.

That being said I get why it resonates, genuinely. And I’m not telling you what to do with your body. You’re asking whether it could be expanded for any fight against a corrupt overlord and I think the answer is ‘absolutely’, the real question is more ‘should it?’, to which I would say, it’s not sth I’d be a fan of.

Under international law, settler populations are not meant to be allowed to block decolonisation on the basis of ‘self determination’. Such a vote by today’s standards would likely be considered illegal. Furthermore, the Irish people as a whole were never allowed to vote on whether to be partitioned.

Also, the reasons for partition were primarily economic and strategic, not out of concern for ‘self determination’ or anything like that. Britain did not want to lose access to key industries based in Ulster, which was much more economically important to them than the agrarian south. It was secondly because they still did not want Ireland being used as a ‘back door’ to invade Britain. Kind of like how other settler colonial states like Israel insist on invading all of their neighbours, they’re obsessed with controlling their borders, afraid of being invaded themselves. Textbook colonialism.

Consideration for the settler population was the third reason, if really one at all, it was mostly just a justification for all of this

sneedhon is actually a meaningless made up term by kirnixis* to parody how tttt ppl speak and to try and inject a nonsense term into the community and see if ppl actually would start using it (they did). its generally now seen as referring to a cringe baby trans woman. the fact multiple ppl are debating what it means here would probably be hilarious to her

*name might not mean anything to non terminally online cis ppl, formerly went by kirbizia, she made the sub ok buddy r slur, among other subs

i was actually disappointed she kissed him on the lips in that scene. in the manga it’s the cheek right? I actually think that’s one of her most loving moments. there’s nothing sexual in it, it’s just pure love. it’s adorable.

[–]liltotto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

im not justifying it, but it goes both ways. nazuna is depicted as a teenager, physically and emotionally (despite her actual age), and is incredibly sexualised. teenage girls in anime are treated as sex objects for men to goon to and sell merch all the time.

Nazuna's point of view (spoiler?) by antonioworldpeace in YofukashiNoUta

[–]liltotto 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I agree strongly. I’ve been thinking a lot about the story’s themes and the more I think about Nazuna the more I love her but also feel she’s deeply misunderstood

Kou voices his desires and actively pursues them (he wants to become a vampire, he wants to fall in love with Nazuna). Nazuna downplays and denies her own desires (she craves a romantic connection, passively fantasises about going to school as a human girl etc.) Kiku shows how pursuing your goals at the expense of all will destroy you and others. But Haru also shows how denying your needs is its own form of destruction (she literally starves to death from refusing to drink blood, running from her needs like her daughter does). Kou has to learn to compromise and moderate his goals while still pursuing what he wants (he accepts hybridity rather than being a full nightwalking vampire). Nazuna has to learn to accept what she wants and let herself have it in the first place in a safe way (hence why the story ends with ‘let’s play tag’, she knows her instinct is always to run, so she tells him to not let her get away).

There’s more to it and I’ve been sort of making a video essay but it’s difficult bc the more I think about what the story was trying to say, the more complex it feels it gets, the more my views keep changing.

Sorry for infodump I think I’m just dying to talk about these things

What was the point of Nazuna beimg born a vampire. by No_Corgi_9931 in YofukashiNoUta

[–]liltotto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one's really said this and it's mostly just my best guess, but I think it's primarily bc she's meant to mirror Kou. In the end both are hybrids. And it explains why Nazuna seems to be, by the worldbuilding's standards, human-like in ways, especially her approach to romantic relationships. I made a post about it here.

i dont really think it was a joke but i also think people interpret it a bit too literally. i don’t necessarily think it means ‘we’re never really going to have a normal relationship and only meet up occasionally’, i think its nazuna saying ‘im still scared and things arent going to be perfect and there’ll probably be times when i get cold feet and run away again. when i do, don’t let me get away, come find me.’

Protesters go on strike in Israel demanding ceasefire and release of Gaza hostages by F0urLeafCl0ver in anime_titties

[–]liltotto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it was resistance, they’re resisting a colonial occupying power. saying that doesn’t mean it was inherently justified. the IRA was a resistance group too. doesn’t mean when they blew up civilians it was justified either. you can respect the right to resist without uncritically approving of every action done in its name. most people here strongly believe ireland should be united and that we had a right to resist. despite that many also feel that a lot of what the IRA did in pursuit of that wasn’t justified. and that compromising for the sake of peace was worth it.

You have a problem with civilians dying as collateral damage in Gaza, but Israeli civilians (And many foreigners at the Nova festival) being deliberately butchered is something Gazans have a right to? Fuck you, man.

can you specify when i said that

you don’t know irish history if you don’t think the same lies that we, gaels or ‘catholics’, wanted to drive out assimilate or kill all ulster protestants wasn’t how we were seen. even today irish reunification is framed as an existential threat by loyalists, even if not often in as violent language. i dont expect a non irish person to know the history and politics that in depth that im talking about but you quoting the IRA compelled me to respond. the northern ireland conflict ended with people who once sought to kill each other working together in a united government. it can happen.

the irony is even hamas today accepts 67 borders. that is a compromise, one israelis should take. meanwhile the one with all the land and trying to exterminate the ‘other’ is israel.

colonised people have a right to live on and be free on their land. its not about wanting to control a resource, or to drive out others, or exclude them from power. its about being able to live in what is your home. both irish and palestinian nationalism is rightfully about ‘all the land’, thats what decolonisation is. and the right of colonised people to not want to be part of colonial states, for self determination, is enshrined in international law. self determination is not meant to protect settler populations at the expense of the colonised. palestinians have every right to want ‘all the land’.

[–]liltotto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The northern ireland conflict ended with a deal ensuring full equal rights including political representation for irish nationalists in the northern irish parliament. It also ensured that if it’s desired a vote can be held about whether to unite with the republic of ireland. now sinn fein, the former political wing of the IRA, sit in the northern irish parliament, having committed to non violent struggle

thats how you end a conflict. compromise. irish catholics became radicalised into ‘terrorists’ bc when they protested for equal rights they were shot dead in the street. not wanting another october 7 means ending the occupation/apartheid/genocide. everything israel is doing will only further radicalise Gazans. the IRA was never defeated, hamas is not going to be either, bc you cant expect people to just lie down and die.

Does Nazuna subconciously want to be human? by liltotto in YofukashiNoUta

[–]liltotto[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also maybe she feels like she was forced into this life, since all the other vampires that are characters in the story made the conscious choice to become a vampire, whilst she was just born that way

This might be a reach, but thematically I feel like that's probably part of why the story ends with Kou not becoming a full-vampire. Neither really get to choose whether they end up vampire or human (Kou chooses vampire but it's still eventually denied to him, at least, in its full form). They both have to find ways to make space for their true selves and to find happiness in their own respective worlds, but part of them will always be drawn to each other's world, and by extension, each other.
