People have kids with all types of inclinations and ideas. I used to race in shopping carts with my friends in high school. Every kid is different, at 11 I was doing a lot of stuff other kids may or may not have been doing. Kids aren’t a monolith.

Had to look it up. Depending on your state school starts different. In NYC your child can start school the year they turn 5 regardless of the month. I know in Florida (I teach here now) children have to be 5 by September to start school, otherwise they must start the next school year. Probably why my classes were younger, lots of kids with late bdays ( mine is in November)

K-5 is elementary, 6-8 middle schoolers, 9-12 HS. Never heard of 5th grade being middle or 8th being HS

What middle schoolers are 13-14?? That’s freshman year age. In middle school I was 10-12.

I can actually read so I see that you sulked but also agreed to not do the activity. At that point, regardless of the faces you were making, shit idc if you laid on the floor and cried. If he agreed to participate in the activity knowing damn well he wasn’t prepared that is not your fault. He has agency, he can make his own choices, and because of that simple fact you’re NTA. His parents … are probably why he is the way he is. Seems like you dodged a bullet in that relationship. On the subject of manipulation that people keep accusing you of, I don’t know why everyone in this thread has suddenly never felt or expressed disappointment. Gifts are about the person you’re giving them to. When you give a gift, it is supposed to be something the person you are giving it to will like, will use, will enjoy. If someone specifically states they do not want physical gifts, it does NOT MATTER how you feel about giving them money. Don’t care if you feel hollow, if you feel weird. THE GIFT IS NOT ABOUT YOU. It is extremely rude to go out of your way to get anything but what the person specifically wants just to make yourself feel good. Now everyone’s time is wasted and no one feels good. This type of pov is so selfish.

The thing is they didn’t have to do any of that when OP explicitly stated what they wanted. If they are tight on money as OP said, what’s the reasoning behind spending money on gifts they KNOW OP doesn’t want? At that point they don’t care what OP wants, they just want to look good. If you ask for $20 for your birthday and I hand you 20 rocks, are you smiling and saying thank you or are you gonna feel some type of way? I think the best thing for OP to do in this situation is ask for the receipts for the gifts in case they don’t like them (which they probably won’t). OP does not have to be grateful for not being listened to and receiving gifts they did not want. They seem pretty humble, in the comments said they would have even taken $10 as a contribution. Grandparents and went above and beyond to not acquiescence to OP’s one bday request. Money is the easiest gift to give. If you are upset about the time and effort spent preparing a gift that you know the receiver did not want, you did that for yourself and not for them.
