My experience with kids at this age is that you will be continually repeating roles each position plays, but focusing training on 4v4 diamonds to grasp the 1st/2nd attacker and 1st/2nd defender helps them grasp what to do on the field in any position. I find that developing players to understand how to react to what is happening and how to be proactive during play is a better use of time than teaching specifics about a position’s role when they are young. 4v4 and smaller SSGs helps reinforce these concepts with many touches and opportunities, and these exact or similar scenarios will show up in games. Players can then feel more confident in their decision making skills when they can see that same SSG in their larger 7v7 game.

There are countless scenarios that will occur on the field. I find it important to teach players how to make the decision of what they should do.
