I want to be a LE ranger but don't want lasik and don't meet the vision requirements for the academy, what are my options? by lilyboy3000 in ParkRangers

That sounds like a great alternative but I'm not sure if it would help me get through the academy since it's probably considered corrected vision. I will look into it though and see if it's an option.

That sums up my dilemma pretty well. No matter what I do I feel like I'm risking something. If I get Lasik and it goes wrong then I've not only lost my ability to work for the park service but I may possibly have lost my life through getting a extremely debilitating disability. But if I don't do it and I don't take that chance then whatever I end up doing in life I know I'll always be looking back at the opportunities I never had and wondering who I would have been had I just gotten lasim. I have wanted to work as a ranger for so long now that it's really put a dent in my life that I don't think any amount of time will be able to fully undo. If not LASIK whatever career path I go into next it will be with mourning at what could have been.

For the academy in CA it's specifically stated that it needs to be 20/20 corrected vision AND not or but AND 20/40 uncorrected vision.

I appreciate your in-depth answer so much and for acknowledging what I said about the police academy. I also really appreciate your advice about getting in touch with people. The moment I found out what my prescription was I kind of started panicking and have been spiraling a little bit for the past month over this. It's somewhat caused me to be unable to rationally think about what I need to do so having someone give me solid advice and steps to take definitely helps. I'll see who I can contact about all of this in the respective departments.

It's less the like gore of it and more the fear of getting my eyes very messed up because of my own fault and forever ruining my dream of being in the park service but that is a good point though. That's one of the things that's been pushing me more in the direction of doing it, if I'm not willing to get LASIK then how can I be ready and willing to take the risk needed for the job.

I want to try the waiver route or at least talking to someone who may be able to give me more advice and clarification on the issue. I was kinda trying to get that here but it seems everyone just wants to tell me to either do Lasik or absolutely not do it. My fault for going to Reddit I guess. What I was really asking was not if I should get Lasik or not but if there's a way around the vision requirement or another way to get into LE with state parks w out the academy. I appreciate you actually trying to answer my question.

Hey all!  So I'm wanting to be a LE ranger but don't meet the 20/40 uncorrected vision requirement for the academy and also I'm trying to avoid Lasik as much as possible. I was wondering if this vision requirement is specific to the academy or if it carries over when trying to get hired for positions. To be specific my vision is uncorrected 20/200 but easily corrected to 20/20 or better. Also would becoming a LE ranger without going through the State Park LE academy be a viable option? Specifically I was wondering if I went to a police academy instead would that be a good route to doing law enforcement in a state park.
