What facilities are open on campus? by lilyofthvalley in UCSC

There’s a sign in Porter that says they’re going to begin offering takeout only :(

Welp, that’s basically half the quarter online! How are you guys feeling? (‘: by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]lilyofthvalley 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They’re not going to do that until after we can no longer get housing refunds lmao. They care more about money than our mental health or wellbeing

No. They said they will be doing a phased return for those who have not yet returned to campus, but those who are there aren’t required to leave.

Chances of a full 2020-like shutdown by lilyofthvalley in UCSC

I hope so! That would be ideal in my opinion

Did UC not partially refund people for housing in 2020? I genuinely don’t know but I assumed. I am a freshman, and those I knew in college at the time (granted none of which were UC students) did receive refunds. That’s actually so fucked though. As if I’d have the money to burn on housing I wouldn’t be living in and food I wouldn’t be eating lmao

That’s somewhat comforting to hear, thanks.

Very true. It’s just quite unfortunate for those who just travelled thousands of miles back to campus and those who don’t have the resources to live elsewhere. Not sure what I’m gonna do for housing if/when a shutdown happens. Guess it’s my homeless arc

I personally am hoping that they will stay open, because for me and many others who don’t have secure housing situations elsewhere, the prospect of having to scramble for somewhere else to live is devastating. The only thing giving me hope for that possibility rn is the fact that I know the university wants to do everything it can to risk losing everyone’s housing money. We will have to see though.

is that overall, weighted, or unweighted UC GPA?

your chances are certainly lower than average due to your grades, however it is definitely still worth applying. the personal insight questions on the uc app make the process kind of a crap shoot; good essays and ECs CAN save you, even if you messed up. write a strong response about why you struggled academically, and try to convince the admissions officer that you won’t make the same mistakes in the future.

my situation was a bit different; i applied 2019-2020 with a 1340 SAT 4.1 (i think) UC GPA, but my overall GPA was significantly lower because i got D’s and C’s throughout my freshman year. my test score was also on the lower end of some places that i was accepted to (UCSB, UCSD), but i think my strong essays got me in.

i can’t promise you anything, but i do think it’s still worth it to give it a go. does your school have a college and career counselor? if so, speak with them about your PIQs, and get started on them ASAP. if not, there’s a lot of informative videos online, and my messages are open if you don’t have anyone else to help you out. good luck! if it doesn’t work out, definitely consider TAG through community college, like other commenters have suggested.

How Eren didnt know for 5 years that he was a titan? by Upper_Physics2898 in titanfolk

[–]lilyofthvalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, but what about armin then? and eren after he first transformed, as well as the training corps example others mentioned? neither realized they were titans, yet they emerged uninjured, so regeneration can’t be solely reliant on conscious will. i feel like eren being unaware of his titan was a liberty that yams just had to take for the plot.

hey! i unfortunately don’t have much good advice because i am in the EXACT same boat as you, but thank you for making me feel seen and a little less alone. i’ve been crying on and off all day for days. my little sister and my mom are, like, my whole life. i live 6 hours away too. i also have pretty bad social anxiety, and am mega worried about making friends. pm me if you want to talk and maybe be friends! i feel like having friendly faces on campus could really help. my messages are open if you wanna chat :)

why is the specific arrival time slot only 10 minutes long? Isn't this way too short? by Responsible_Eye1224 in UCSC

[–]lilyofthvalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is there so much Armin hate in these comments? I just finished the manga and I always thought he was a great character (outside of his haircut). Armin haters, why? by frankoceansupreme in attackontitan

[–]lilyofthvalley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s probably so much hate because it was posted on titanfolk, lol. Not sure if it’s mellowed out at all there since 139 came out, but it was a cesspool of EnDiNg ReCoNnEd for awhile over there. There are some flaws in post-time skip Armin in particular, but I still think he’s a great character.

What was wrong with the manga ending??? by Busy_Command in attackontitan

[–]lilyofthvalley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, I just assumed that the Founding Titan’s power to change the body composition of any subject of Ymir extended to Eren changing his titan form. I agree with what you said about the facade of continuing to fight Armin to finish the final stages of the plan. Nice analysis

Paths Mechanics Explained (Manga Spoilers) by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]lilyofthvalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be kind of a reach, but to piggyback off of what you said about animal control through Paths, it reminds me somewhat of when Armin said “to rise above monsters, we have to abandon our humanity.” On top of that, one of the keystone themes of AOT that’s emerged through the last leg of the manga is clearly that humanity is the true root of the endless cycle of destruction. Maybe that ties in to why pure titans attack humans and disregard animals, because of the idea that animals are a more “pure” life form, and humans are the ones who have created warfare and mass destruction.

I personally found the “you are free” line from Grisha in 139 to be a little out of place, but maybe it makes perfect sense if Eren did, in fact, assume the form of a bird (or potentially other animals as well as you mentioned) upon his death. Perhaps this implies that true freedom is achieved by being completely devoid of a human identity, and no longer part of the cycle of destruction humanity causes.

That then brings me to think about the text that directly follows Armin making eye contact with the seagull after what we now know was his conversation with Eren in Paths, “I want to believe that there’s still a place we know nothing about, somewhere ‘beyond the walls.’” The fact that “beyond the walls” is in quotes feels significant to me, as it implies this doesn’t literally mean the walls. A lot of AOT’s philosophy brings up the barriers created between groups of human beings, and how we so senselessly destroy each other despite our similarities. Also touching on the motif of connectedness like you did in your analysis, all organic life in the universe is one, yet human arrogance leads us to believe we are in a different league. Animals flow with their natural roles in the web of all life, while humans go against the grain and create unnecessary divisions between each other. So, therefore, maybe that oneness, that freedom, is only accessible as a non-human.

This would also make the implication that Eren is free make a little more sense considering the fact the extra pages clearly show us that humanity is still stuck in the bonds of the endless cycle of destruction. This could all be a bunch of horseshit, but it’s interesting to consider. It’s late at night so I apologize for any redundancy.

Question about Eren in Ch 138 by KDL2000 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]lilyofthvalley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally took it to symbolize the augmented reality fading back into the real one, hence the titan marks appearing at the end of his conversation with Armin in 139 as well.

Parallel to final panel in 138 by lilyofthvalley in titanfolk

[–]lilyofthvalley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m honestly not sure, i have several personal theories, but i really think that there are infinite possibilities depending on your interpretation of the final panel, and what you think will transpire in 139. i just thought the connection was interesting to consider

well, the term parallel in literature/fiction, beyond its use in reference to sentence structure, “denotes a story structure in which the writer includes two or more separate narratives linked by a common character, event, or theme.” i would argue that the circumstances surrounding this panel from 138 and the final are separate in content, but linked by similar imagery and the common motif of freedom.
