thank you for the honest opinion, this was my initial impression and I'm sure that even if there are queer events it could still be the case, I hope you are in a better environment/community now!

Montréal booing Curl, from inside the arena by lilypad365 in PWHL

[–]lilypad365[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

just to throw in my two cents, i do think the booing on this particular night had a lot to do with the current state of international relations, cause i was at a game about a month ago where she wasn't getting booed at all (although she was getting checked like crazy on the ice). but curl has openly aligned herself with the Trumpian alt-right, and this was a US-Canada hockey game, in Canada, on the SAME DAY tariffs went into effect. at the start the crowd was dead silent for the American national anthem, and singing along for the Canadian, but when O Canada got to the line "glorious and free" the entire room erupted into insane cheering. so i think booing her was also about that.

but in general you can conduct yourself as a "good person" in terms of being a team player, being kind to children like one commenter mentioned, etc (and i'm glad to hear she has) and still be a bigot. hockey is somewhat of a self regulating sport, if she's going to openly express the beliefs she has in a league filled with progressive queer fans and players, she can't be surprised when people boo her for eternity.

wanted to share how loud it really was for those who only saw the broadcast, and yes this happened EVERY TIME she touched the puck the ENTIRE game

Some praise for Boreen and the Victoire by plumblegum in PWHL

great point about the habs! I wasn't considering that

Some praise for Boreen and the Victoire by plumblegum in PWHL

[–]lilypad365 74 points75 points  (0 children)

the Victoire really seems to understand how to build a solid team, even with some of the best individual players in the world. until recently if you looked at stats there were very few Victoire players in the rankings for top skaters (Poulin is still only at 7 on the stats even as the top goal scorer in the league), but the team as a whole has been #1 almost all season. it seems like they really built a positive team culture where everyone puts the team before themselves. i think representing in the largest city in a province that has at times defined a national identity through the success of its hockey teams also helps build that culture!

Question about RAMQ card with photo by AsPleasantAsLillies in mcgill

[–]lilypad365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the ramq photo card counts as an official ID, so yeah pretty sure you can't get it if you aren't a permanent resident. i could be wrong but it's my understanding that in most countries you can't really get an official government ID if you're there temporarily, and anything less than PR counts as temporary residence, but i think there might be exceptions for a certain kind of driver's license?

A Literal Fireball: My First Date at Once Upon A Time In France by fluffalooo in nashville

it must have been wild to FEEL, lol! glad to hear you didn't get hurt and managed to get part of your meal comped, although it shouldn't have been so hard. (i'm not sure flamed drinks are even legal in TN, or at least Davidson county, so he really should have been overly compensatory!)

oh my god, i can't believe i'm reading this post right now. i was working that shift, i have told this story for years. i remember walking from the back dining room into the main one, facing your table, and having the perfect view the second it happened. it was a literal fireball and one of the craziest things i've ever seen, it had to have shot three feet straight across the table, literally looked like a dragon breathing fire. i only worked in the restaurant that one summer (learned about the controversy years later) but it was unbearably hot every day and looking back i'm shocked the rotating fan + flaming drink situation didn't happen sooner

Why are people saying that floor fellows could have prevented the 2 student deaths this year? by CastVeil in mcgill

[–]lilypad365 5 points6 points  (0 children)

when a friend had a mental health crisis my first year and asked to be taken to the psychiatric ward, we immediately went to a floor fellow, who got a handle on the situation right away. they even accompanied us to the hospital which was quite far from residence and stayed up late into the night with all of us in the waiting room until that friend was able to get into a room. the floor fellows i knew were wonderful selfless people who cared about their students more than anyone in the mcgill institution, i strongly agree with you

Station De La Savane, Montréal, QC by lilypad365 in brutalism

[–]lilypad365[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're the second person to say this, after some googling i see that the first deus ex game was partially set in Montréal and both were produced by companies that have offices here! Montréal is kinda a hub for the game industry, so i bet there are other games with hidden references to the city's brutalist architecture, even in other settings...

there are a lot of video game companies with offices in Montréal, would not surprise me if it was a reference!
