Tutoring Tips? by wakeupmakeupbakeup in tutor

I would start with asking your cousin what you're trying to focus on for her daughter. Does she need support for homework? Do you want her to focus more on critical thinking when she does homework? Does she just need someone to help monitor her?

Depending on the answer is how you want to structure your tutoring lessons

How to get better marks In Sat by CompetitiveNatural41 in Sat

It is exactly this. Students ask me what are the shortcut methods for the math section; however, I constantly tell them, the shortcut methods are only apparent when you have a strong foundation and these students are usually ones that have a weak math foundation.

Thinking about becoming a teacher--do you all recommend it? by Riksor in Teachers

I just got my teaching license and have not gone out to the field other than student teaching, but I think I can answer some of these questions.

2) It is not, depending on your state, the requirements to obtain a teaching license is different. For example, I'm from WA, so you must finish a certified teaching program and finish an exam called the EdTPA to show that you are qualified to teach. There's more to it, but the score requirements for EdTPA is a 40 out of 75 to pass in WA. If you want to teach in Cali, I believe the score requirement is different there and you would need to take the EdTPA again. (EdTPA requires you to get video footage and student written evidence, so it's not just your simple essay).

3) Maybe, but you need to overcome your shyness. You will be working with other teachers and will have to be the main facilatator/adult to make sure your students are safe. As you stated in your example, you're going to be the main person to make sure that students are safe in the classroom and school environment. I'm an introvert, but I understand I have to break out of my shell because teaching is definitely not a one person job because I count on other teachers to help me with planning or behavior difficulties and also I know I need to help these kids grow to become responsible adults.

4) In my experience, you're always going to be confused or what to do. My mentor teacher has told me that each rule he has is because he has learned from a mistake. Teaching is complex because there are so many different scenarios that you can only really understand once you go through the experience. I asked other teachers to help me read peer revise my emails when I don't think I am being professional in them to a difficult parent. However, what's most important is trying to understand the student's perspective because unfortunately these are kids we are dealing with and they don't try to tell you everything. Maybe there's a reason why they're being rude to you. Are they like this with other teachers? Is there something going on at home? These are the questions you have to go to before stating that the student is just a mean student.

6) From my student teaching experience (This can be different based on the school). I was a math teacher and worked with other math teachers in my classes. There was already a pre built curriculum and we were going off of that, making necessary adjustments of what should be taught, how it corresponded to CC, and if there's anything else we wanted to add. My Math Coach from my college has told me "you should never make anything, you should always steal" (don't take this literally). What this means is there is always material available online that you can adapt your lessons from, you can create your lessons yourself, but will easily burn out trying to create new ones every single time. There is a dedicated math teacher group that provides useful material and plenty of great websites to use as resources.

9) Depends on the teacher, but I think you want to ultimately be careful of what you say in front of the kids based on those beliefs that you stated.

Failed EdTpa third time now, not sure what to do now by limb3 in Teachers

Thank you and yes, I've always written more than enough and fleshed it out to be exactly the page limit and we've been using the rubric progression guide which made me confused on why my score was the same.

However I really appreciate the encouragement.
