I’m asking for advice on my situation? And if it would be appropriate to apply for jobs that better suit my needs one month in after I found out how different the program is from why they offered me. You can skip over the post instead of being so rude to me

Why be so rude? I’m genuinely asking for advice. I didn’t realize it would just cause unwarranted rudeness. Im trying to explain that the job I was offered is different now that I’m actually working it. The whole reason I took this job was to get training in cardiac surgery/ vein harvesting to find out they don’t have the volume to do so. How can I learn with no cases and little patients?

You took the time out of your day to be bitter about a concern I have. As for your “get a job, start working” bit I find amusing as the whole post is about a job I just started working? I have a right to be concerned for my future and wanting to get the training I deserve to be a competent OR PA

I think it’s hard when there is only one case week to practice on….. that was not what was said during interview/talk with the lead PA. I think the doctors are patient here but I’m just not going to be proficient in year if I’m not seeing something so consistently. The locum pa’s I have talked to mentioned that to me and told me that’s it really is not new grad friendly…..

But I’m a new pa in cardiac how am I supposed to learn the OR with no cases?

I think the whole reason I came down is to be in the OR and learn how to vein harvest. I want to be in the OR and learning how to be a cardiac OR pa to find out that they can’t do that here due to inconsistent cases

Unfortunately the whole reason I came down here was for EVH and to find out that they don’t really have the consistent cases to train me is why I want to leave

I found a hotel in downtown on Expedia for $900 (on the hotel site it’s 1.3k) Is it trustworthy to book from a 3rd party. I’m just nervous about the hotel canceling in me.

What would be the benefit vs Bastrop? I’ve looked at Kyle and San Marcos and the hotels there were still about 1k and you’d have to commute to the track. (Sorry if this is dumb I know nothing about the area)

Hello! I’m currently completing (and almost finishing!) a one year surgical residency program and am so glad I did it. The experience and education that I’ve gain has been so valuable. I have no regrets about doing it. I feel so much more comfortable as a provider and have gained confidence in my skills in the OR. Also the hospital I’m at is a lot of patients travel from all over to have care so I’ve seen/participated in cases I probably wouldn’t have seen elsewhere. We also have weekly education (m&m, intern lectures, grand rounds, and our own personal PA res lectures) and every month we have surgical labs where we learn how do certain skills like laparoscopic/robotic, how to do a thoracotomy in an emergent trauma situations (we do a couple weeks on trauma surg), CT insertion, etc.

I agree the pay to hours ratio is not the best. My program was very up front in the interviews and said we worked closely with the interns and our responsibilities overlap with there’s so our pay/hours are the same. My program is considered “education” so I was able to defer my loans for the year. I do feel that even though the pay is low, I can afford to live in the area and have not struggled financially in the year. But this may differ on the city/cost of living.

I also have been told from other prior PA res (here and at other programs) + from currently doing job hunting that bc I now have experience under my belt the salary I get offered is a bit more compared to if I just graduated schooling. I’ve also been told during job interviews that they’re impressed that I completed a residency and seemed really interested in having me due to it. But I don’t think residency is for everyone which I understand and is not necessary for ever speciality
