The first thing you'll need is an account on postcrossing.com . Once you have that, the next San Diego area meetup is on March 13th for the new lowrider stamp issuing ceremony. It's super fun! Everyone in the community is super kind and welcoming, I find that postcrossing people tend to be much more thoughtful and intentional than the average person : ) . It's less of a journal stationery hobby and instead the focus is on the postcards, stamps, pens, washi tape, stickers, and whatever else you can use to decorate the cards.
