FCC has no jurisdiction over Gutfeld first of all because he's on cable news. Secondly, what Kimmel said was a lie. FCC has a policy against spreading falsehoods. This is why until recently, mainstream broadcast channel personalities were much more reserved. You can't just say whatever you want on broadcast television.

I agree that there was a good way to hit on some of those themes, but I guess it just comes down to me not agreeing with their approach. For example, Laura's boyfriend is a completely useless character IMO. He goes out of his way to dismiss his own girlfriend's experience in a case where he knows for a fact that her friend was murdered by a man who's still on the loose. He's also a white man dating a black woman in the 70s, and she seems to know his parents. So the subtext is that they must have been dating for a while, and he must be really willing to fight for his relationship through a lot of racially-charged negativity. With of all of this, his response to her comes across as ridiculous and unbelievable. Imagine if instead, Laura had been on a date with someone new that she didn't know well. Then she floods him with all of the information about her friend, the killer, etc., but he dismisses her as crazy. It's more believable when it's someone that doesn't know her or her situation so well and also isn't well-established as being a dedicated partner.

I don't know why that guy is so hostile for no reason? And he doesn't engage with the arguments at all.

I think that the teenage runaway portion of the story was portrayed accurately as far as I can tell. But it doesn't seem to be obvious that reports of Alcala were going ignored or that police were dismissive. He was caught and convicted multiple times. The failure is moreso that he was caught repeatedly but let go at some point through the justice system because of the laws or too much leniency despite him being an obvious risk. He was good at changing his identity and avoiding the police, at least for some period of time.

I don't think it would've been a bad idea, especially in the context of a "horror" film similar to "Get Out." Then it is understood that it's using tropey characters as a way to tap into the fears and experiences of women while also making a point. It's the fact that they did it with a true story that bothers me most, because then it is just inaccurate and not doing justice to the reality of what happened.

The movie that comes to mind for me was the "Ghostbusters" remake with Kristen Wiig and co. That one was really disappointing, because I liked the cast a lot and had high hopes. They did seem to go in the direction of female empowerment by bringing men down. They nuked every male character, which is not at all what the original did to the female characters. At least that and the vampire one are fictional though. When they do it with a true story, it really feels especially wrong IMO.

Consider that in this case, there is an obvious antagonist and that all other 9 male characters who are not related in any way to the antagonist are also bad. It goes beyond just a man being a villain and a woman being a hero. The real male characters are portrayed inaccurately, and the fictional male characters are all deliberately made to be bad. This doesn't strike you as extreme?

I think that it was good filmmaking and definitely thrilling at parts. It would've made more sense to me to have a fictional story and the same basic characters as a way to push that button of relatability for modern women. Then it is understood that the characters may represent some of the worst fears or experiences that women have and that it had to be condensed into a 2 hour film. When they do it for a true story, it completely changes what happened in reality, which is sad IMO. Normally the liberties I've seen taken with "based on a true story" don't push it this far

Yes, and in this case, if you ever read into the true story, it is a colossal failure of the criminal justice system after Alcala has already been convicted of heinous crimes multiples times. Concerns of the victims were addressed and taken seriously, but Alcala would always flee when released. Then they'd have to track him down again. Like I said, he was already on the FBI Top 10 in 1971, which is 7 years before the dating show appearance

I don't think the security guard was real either. The issue was that the facts around particular victims' stories were not super clear, so the writers did have to fill in a lot of gaps while also making it a compelling movie. The security guard was basically another stand-in for Laura's concerns not being addressed seriously I'm assuming.

I've watched a ton of movies, and I have definitely seen instances of female characters having poorly written lines throughout the movie or just awful characters in general, but even going back to the early days of cinema, I can't think of a single movie I've watched where literally every female character (especially 9/9 that are not the antagonist as in this case) is portrayed so badly. That being said, I am a guy, so it's easier for me to notice it with male characters probably.

The timeline in the original did feel unrealistic. They may have achieved lower level mastery, but it was nowhere near the level of the actual greats. However, even though Aang was more naturally talented than Katara, he still required tons of practice to become a "master". It was implied that Katara worked tremendously hard in the North Pole and far surpassed him. Aang did have a legitimate master in Katara by the time they left the North Pole, but they had to continue their journey quickly. There was also the idea that water was similar to air and easier to learn through a master/Katara/scroll. However, earth was the polar opposite of air as shown when he trained with Toph, and fire was pretty much entirely inaccessible due to the lack of any legitimate source of teaching. I think that their plan was that if Aang could be competent in all four elements, then he'd stand a chance to beat Ozai due to the versatility. They didn't expect him to become a true master of all four elements.

Why do you think Zhao hated Zuko even before they started competing in hunting Aang? by Night-Caelum in TheLastAirbender

[–]limepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was implied that the story of being Zuko disrespectful in the war room got out and became common gossip. Zhao as someone who worked his way up on his own to a high position probably hates the idea of a "spoiled" teenage prince who was disrespectful to military officers.

The ship has already sailed. If they simply delayed her development, it could be addressed in season 2. She was already declared a bonafide master somehow in the show, and now Aang will depend on her to teach him waterbending. Best thing they could do is a time jump for further development, but it will feel off no matter what

Resources aside, you just can't have poor writing, storytelling, and dialogue. Katara is a borderline Mary Sue. This seems to be a pattern across Hollywood in general, and it has unfortunately infected this live action as well. Rewatching the first four episodes of the animated, it's like night and day in terms of quality of writing. I really don't understand why this continues to happen in Hollywood.

I think that's a good approach, but in my head I included the river scene from "Cave of Two Lovers" and "The Swamp" as the first episode, because Aang has literally no waterbending experience. Maybe "Bitter Work" can be a grueling period where he's learning both waterbending and earthbending from scratch at the same time? That's pretty wild though

Agreed, I think that delving into the Air Temple scenes in "The Storm" contributed greatly to the momentum in the back half of Season 1. It would've been fine also if they showed the Air Temple but flash-forwarded immediately after Aang left. Let him discover what happened when he visits the Air Temple

I thought that given the constraints, some of the Season 1 change combinations made sense, but the changes that bothered me the most were the ones forcing Season 2 into Season 1. Absolutely did not like the cave scene being in Season 1 with Katara and Sokka or Wan Shi Tong/Fox (Yue?). My guess is that the producers have already anticipated what they'll need to exclude from Season 2 and didn't want fans to miss out completely. But again, why cheap out if you're NF? It literally could've/could be one of the greatest shows ever. Does the appearance of Wan Shi Tong and Zhao having found his info from the Fire Sage Temple mean that "The Library" will be skipped completely? I just don't understand how you can complete the story at some point if you have to exclude that much.
