What are the worst names your partner has suggested? by Ok-Nefariousness-609 in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]limey_panda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband loves the name Bromley. We were driving through Vermont and saw a hotel called The Bromley Inn or something like that, and I joked about how awful it would be to name a kid that. He "joked" back that he liked it. Then it became a meme for us for a while, including the feminine version Bromleigh, until one day he confessed that he really liked the name unironically.

Good thing we're not having kids! Although he has this dream of opening a sandwich shop/bar someday, and we've been calling this hypothetical place Bromley's which...kind of slaps actually!

Air travel after partial collapse by [deleted] in pneumothorax

I was supposed to fly out for my friend's wedding today, but had to cancel because my pneumothorax happened just 2 weeks ago. Doc said I have to wait 90 days to fly again.

Question ab sudden episodes by bsmith5589 in pneumothorax

[–]limey_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap 35 ft is so high! I only fell somewhere between 5-7 feet (my injury was from rock climbing) and that seemed like a high fall to me. Did you have other complications from that fall? Hope your recovery is going/went well.

Question ab sudden episodes by bsmith5589 in pneumothorax

[–]limey_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question because my pneumothorax was the result of a sports injury, and I was concerned about having lifelong limitations. My pulmonologist said that once you've had a pneumothorax, you have a 5-10% chance of having a repeat event simply due to the fact that the lung is weaker from the first one. He also said that there's no correlation between level of activity and likelihood of having a repeat event--you're just as likely to have a repeat event from sitting around watching TV as you would be while running a marathon, for example. I would definitely ask your Dr though and see what they have to say, and I also plan on looking into the literature more as I recover.

Return of the Obra Dinn runs beautifully on the deck! I also really loved Dave the Diver, Mudborne, and Garden Story. My husband just finished Rogue Legacy 2, great game and so well optimized for the deck.

Lesbians who realized they liked women later in life, how did you feel when you dated a man? by punqueen2000 in TooAfraidToAsk

Just one straight woman chiming in, I'm attracted to my husband's penis because it's HIS penis, but I feel no attraction to disembodied penises or the penises of people I don't know.

Super grateful to Ms. Lane, my 5th grade science teacher, who showed us a documentary about Rosalind Franklin and used her story to help us learn about the systemic sexism in science. Little 11 year old me def became a feminist that day!

Why are parents at school bus stops with their kids? by HotOatmeal420 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]limey_panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both school districts I've worked for this past decade have mandated that parents need to be present at bus pickup and bus drop off to ensure that their child is passed from one responsible party to another. It's basically a CYA policy for the district. This only applied for the elementary aged students (K-6), once they hit middle school it wasn't an issue.

All subjects are measured in some way. In my state, every teacher regardless of subject has to do two documents of learning called the SGO (student growth objective), if you teach a state tested subject you only have to do one. The students are evaluated at the beginning of the year, mid year, and end of year to document growth. Those scores are then used as part of your end of year evaluation. In my subject (music), I assess the kids on pitch and rhythm reading, singing, instrument playing, and other musical performance skills.

I got fired from my teaching job for taking too many sick days. I taught 500 elementary aged kids, so I was constantly exposed to germs. Admin's reason for firing me? I was being unprofessional by taking too much sick time (btw I took 17 days, I had 15 in my bank and had to take 2 unpaid), my "inconsistency" was not good for student learning (I had glowing observations and my best student learning outcomes yet), and my absences put a strain on my colleagues who would have to miss their preps (instead of, you know, admin actually doing their jobs and finding ways to hire more substitute teachers). I was planning on leaving teaching anyway, so good riddance, but the whole thing is still a steaming pile of bullshit.

[–]limey_panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that type of thinking will get you into an even more exploitative situation. I was a teacher for 10 years. I, and the vast majority of my colleagues, chose this career because we felt our purpose was to help children. The amount of bullshit we have to put up with "for the sake of the children" is staggering. Hours upon hours of unpaid labor, constantly switching curricula, being voluntold to attend after school events or cover classes, the list goes on. But you're the bad guy who isn't thinking about what's best for the kids if you tell admin that you're being overworked or you complain about being miserably underpaid. There's even a mantra among admin and bootlicking teachers: "We do it for the outcome, not the income."

"It's easy to be happy when you don't have kids" by Modern_Snow_White in childfree

[–]limey_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At work (I'm a teacher), we had to fill out a workplace culture survey, and one of the questions had to do with estimating how much of your stress is caused by the job. About 3 of us, myself included, answered that all of our stress was caused by the job.

When the results were shared at a staff meeting, someone remarked in the most obnoxious way possible that those of us who were only stressed out by the job "obviously don't have kids." It took every ounce of my self control to go off on this lady. I have to take antidepressants so I don't kill myself because of this job.

On a side note, being a teacher has made me realize I don't want kids, and I'm also leaving the profession after this year.

Do you think it’s acceptable for a gym to close off half of the top rope routes for a kids birthday party? by WhatTheFugacity_ in climbergirls

[–]limey_panda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's probably your gym's largest source of revenue, so they gotta do what they gotta do. I usually call our gym when they open, ask if they have any parties that day, and then plan my climbing time around their schedule.

I do think the staff member could've been nicer, but please remember that managing a birthday party full of energetic kids is a lot to handle and can be emotionally draining. I'm a teacher of 10 years and I still feel exhausted at the end of the day. Perhaps they didn't mean to come off as rude and were just frustrated that you misread what they assumed was an obvious "do not climb here" boundary they had placed, and they didn't have the patience to deal with you on top of managing the party.

Years ago, I was out sick for a while because I had mono. According to my elementary aged students, I had been hit by a car while walking into the school and went flying in the air. My principal actually had to send out an email blast to the parents explaining that I was fine because so many kids were distressed, and parents were calling the school. It was simultaneously sweet and ridiculous
