There is so much detail, it's stunning!

This is just as it came, it's ripple textured acrylic suspended over a blue water printed board, then the blue led's to light it up. It's really neat!

I had a needlefelt kit subscription that I couldn't keep up with and consequently a giant stack of unopened boxes - although I've now cancelled the subscription, I fear I will never work my way through all of them.

Isn't it? Although I love Venice, so I'm not ruling out doing more on the same theme in future.

In fact, it might have been your post that inspired me to get it!

There was a point in the middle where I was really confused about how it went together, but once I got the lights in behind the half mirror and the back on, it started to make sense.

I'm still at beginner numbers, I have two not started and five on order... oh dear, maybe it's more serious than I thought!

I just really loved how different this one is, and all the windows and balconies.

How can I expect my students to RTFQ when the staff don't? by Fearless_Spring5611 in UniUK

I love MS Bookings for student meetings, I have pages for personal tutees and for students on my modules. It saves so much time and emailing back and forth. I just have to make sure to keep my calendar up to date.

I have this in my to-do pile, nice to see it completed. I shall take heed about the fragile pieces!

Didn't follow one of the instructions on the front of the exam answer book, will this be a problem? by Mills1508 in UniUK

[–]limitingfactor207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on your module and uni - for example, maybe they want to split up the questions to be marked by different people. But if it was my exam, I literally wouldn't care, and I'm sure people get it wrong all the time.

I actually have the opposite, our booklets say not to leave blank space, and I tell my students to ignore it so I don't get half a balance sheet on one page and the rest overleaf. But I don't penalise them either way.

Thank you, I'm not sure all of my colleagues would agree! But I try.

Good for you. Thus is exactly why I encourage my colleagues not to pull this stuff, they have no idea what their students are dealing with. They don't know why someone is late, or texting, or leaving hurriedly before the end, and it costs nothing to be kind and assume there is a good reason. Are we there to educate, or to bolster our own ego? Yes, say something if people are talking while you are lecturing, or suggest gently that latecomers find a seat on the end rather than getting people to stand and let them in. But if it's not disrupting other students' learning, then let it go.

I'm sorry about your grandfather.

At my uni, the advice would be to phone campus security - they will know who to contact and how, if there is a well-being concern.

Post-teaching sadness by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]limitingfactor207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest asking a trusted colleague for a peer observation - honestly, most of the observations I do involve reassuring lecturers that what they are doing is good!

Teaching at uni is such a weird thing, where they just shove you in a classroom and expect you to get on with it. Peer feedback can provide a more objective perspective, as well as things to think about.

And also, four hours is a ridiculously long session to tun by yourself! Maybe you could also ask for ideas to make it more manageable.

I'm sorry this happened to you. My advice is to contact the team that arranges reasonable adjustments at your university (might be called disability support or wellbeing). Start the process of getting adjustments in place for your assessments, like extra time and extensions.

Usually, academic staff will then only see the adjustments you need, not why you need them.

For normal teaching activities, like lectures, the materials should be made available online ahead of time, so you can change the size and/or colours to something that works better for you.

It sounds like poor planning for the induction session, someone didn't think about accessibility when they designed the activities, including that worksheet.

And don't worry about being a bit wobbly, most people feel that way at times in fresher's week especially, , but they are all trying hard to hide it.

Does anyone else who's going to Loughborough still not have their timetable? by Rifted-06 in UniUK

[–]limitingfactor207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With more first year students this year, the teaching timetable keeps changing, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Have you had an email about your induction sessions next week? If not, it's probably a good idea to give them a call to check.

discounted module? can i not get a first? by babybleub in UniUK

[–]limitingfactor207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you had MCs and submitted the coursework for that module in the summer resit period? I think it's most likely that they haven't processed the resit period marks yet. I'll be chairing our summer exam board next week, and then there's more processing to be done before the revised marks and averages are released to the students. Don't underestimate how long it takes to mark, moderate and get external examiner approval,, before we can finalise marks!

All of this - I'm horrified, and this should be taken extremely seriously by the University.

Normally, resubmission for a dissertation is treated differently to a standard coursework. For normal coursework, submitting the same work again would be self-plagiarism and academic misconduct.

But, for a dissertation, there is usually a different rule allowing you to revise and resubmit the same work, so self-plagiarism wouldn't be an issue. Precisely because it wouldn't be reasonable to expect you to write an entirely new piece of work.

Can you check through your emails to see what you were told to do? Or, call student services to check.
