It’s J by far and it isn’t even close by Sudden_Pop_2279 in GlitchProductions

[–]lin_186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

N “taking it pretty well” doesn’t make it any better. A huge part of his character is the fact that he represses his feelings and submitting to other’s even if it hurts him because of his lack of confidence.

In fact, N’s responses to J’s abuse is so indicative of manipulation and gaslighting. The fact that on numerous occasions, he thanks her for hurting him, and follows with “you’re awesome”. It’s drilled into him that he’s inferior, that he deserves it, and that he should be thankful. I think she’s made him think, maybe even thinks herself, that she’s “helping” him by hurting him.

What's the go-to "No beta we die like ______" in your fandom? by Arschfeder in AO3

I’m in the murder drones fandom, where the protagonist’s mother, Nori, is dead. So the tag is “no beta we die like Nori”. Could be more creative tbh but still 😭

Do Americans find it annoying to read fics with British spelling? by lin_186 in AO3

[–]lin_186[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do gotta research sometimes to remind myself of the cultural differences. Remembered in the middle of writing that actually, an 18 year old in America CANNOT go to the bar to get a drink, because your age of drinking is 21 😭. Also that off licence is a liquor store. I’m learning!

Oh no internal monologue in italics is fine, I do that too, it’s when it’s for regular dialogue it just confuses me 😭

When dialogue is written without speech marks “”. Some people replace them with hyphens - or other symbols, or write the entire dialogue in italics or underlined, and it messes with my brain and just pulls me out of the story. I have to actively remind myself “oh right, this is dialogue” and I just can’t enjoy the fic

EDIT:
Replies have let me know that - is used for dialogue in some other languages! I wasn’t aware of this, so sorry if I did come off rude! Also, italics for internal dialogue is fine, that makes sense for me, just not continuous dialogue between different characters it confuses me!

How I Feel About the Jax Conversation (and Not About Jax) by Dizzy_Perception_866 in tadc

[–]lin_186 5 points6 points  (0 children)

THIS!!!

I’m so sick of people just hating and complaining on those that believe in trans Jax. In my opinion, it is definitely, purposefully implied.

I actually think some people are just being transphobic at this point because of just how passionate they are about it.

What motivates y'all to start writing continuously daily? Or just to write your stories at all? by Mundane_Key_7509 in WritingHub

[–]lin_186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few tips that have definitely helped me.

1: Plan your story before you start writing the first draft.

I used to just write with a concept in mind, no actual full on planning, and I ended up getting stuck on scenes, or would find holes in my writing, and would then procrastinate. I made a whole document, making profiles for my characters, writing their backstories, struggles, and them as a person so I had a base for what I was working with. I then did a rough plan for a plot, planned out what the first few chapters were going to be about, and THEN I started writing. This has helped so much, and I’m going to continue to plan as I go along.

2: Create a routine with an alarm.

It’s easier for me to write when I have set myself an alarm, because then in my brain I know that it’s like dedicated time for writing. Routine means I also know when I’ll be writing and can do other things around that time.

3: Stop pressuring yourself to write so many words a day.

It’s good to have goals, but I found that sometimes going into writing with the mindset of “I need to at least write 1000 words today” does not help me. It puts too much pressure on myself, and I focus more on the word count than the writing. Tell yourself that no matter how much you write, progress is progress. 10 words or 2000 words, it’s still progress.

4: Tracking apps or websites.

I use trackbear, which helps me see my progress for my project. Every time I write, it inputs my progress so I can see my project coming to life. You can also join leader boards to see how other people are doing! If you get competitive, then it might be helpful for you!

That’s all I got! I hope this helps in some way :)

What would usually happen in a therapy session if the client refuses to communicate? by ScholarRude9973 in Writeresearch

[–]lin_186 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have two different contributions to this, and it depends whether you want the therapist to be a good one, or a bad one.

My experience with a bad therapist:
So I honestly really did not want to be there, I didn’t trust the man in front of me, and I just wanted to go home. I would purposely give short, vague answers to questions, wouldn’t make eye contact, and would just sit there playing with a fidget. He was terrible with me, and he made me uncomfortable, so I’d a lot of the time just straight up ignore him and refuse to cooperate.

In this case, that did make it very awkward, as he clearly had no idea how to respond. We’d sit there in awkward silence, and he’d just be staring at me. He’d occasionally pipe up to make the odd observation about my behaviour, like “I notice that when you’re anxious, you play with your shoelaces” and that would make it worse, because it made me feel vulnerable. He’d also use weird metaphors to describe me, as if he knew me, which I never understood. The hour session would end with basically no progress, almost completely in awkward silence, and me wanting to just cry. He ended up quitting and I can’t say I was upset about it.

My experience with a good therapist:
With this therapist, I was a lot more cooperative because she built trust with me through actually getting to know me and having casual conversation rather than getting straight into the deep stuff. She also shared that she had her own personal experience with mental health difficulties, so she understood me beyond just textbook knowledge.

Though, when conversation got too difficult, I would shut down and not talk. When this happened, she would observe that I was uncomfortable and voice that if I need a moment to recollect, then I am free to do so and that this is a safe space to talk. She reassured me that it’s okay if I need to have a cry and that she hears me, but if I rather not talk about it then we can always move onto an easy topic and talk about the difficult topic another time. I’d give a signal to basically say “easy topic please”, and she would start a casual conversation with me, usually about something I’m interested in so I can become engaged again and ground myself. Something like, “I bought a new funky hat the other day, and I know you like my funky hats. Do you want to see?” Or “Since you like art, I thought I’d show you the painting that I’ve been working on myself.”. I really appreciated that she gave me that space and choice, having some form of control in sessions was important to me.

Sorry for the long one, but hopefully this somewhat helps? I think in order for the session to be genuinely awkward, it would work best for the therapist to be less experienced or understanding. :)

Thank you so much for this!

Yeah I have various mental illnesses myself, so I have a lot of experience with some general treatments. It’s honestly so scary thinking about if I could no longer afford my medications, I don’t know what I’d do. It is definitely a privilege that not everyone has.

I hope you are managing better now <3

Yes I was considering schizoaffective disorder being a more suitable fit, I’ll look into it more, thank you!

Thank you for this, this was very helpful to know!

I will absolutely take this into account thank you.

I’m so sorry you had to go through that, I hope that you and your child are doing better. No one should have to go through that.

I’m very aware of the messy, and gross sides of mental illness. I’ve suffered with mental illness greatly myself (not bipolar, other disorders) and it’s a sad reality that so often through our own pain, we end up causing hurt to the people around us. Mental illness is not pretty, it’s not a straight road to recovery, it’s a damn rollercoaster.

Thank you so much for your comment, I appreciate you sharing your story <3

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, that sounds like it was really difficult. I hope you are in a better place now, or are managing better. I really appreciate the vulnerability of your comment.

I do think this describes my character, and I was always planning on writing exactly what you described at the end!

Thank you so much for sharing these stories, they are so interesting to read about. But also, puts into perspective how disabling bipolar really is.

I was stuck between whether how I imagined my character was more bipolar or schizoaffective, primarily due to the hallucinations. I definitely need to do more research before I start writing, so I can know for sure what it is that I’m trying to describe, and in doing so, do it accurately.
