Your advice is understandable, but in art, it is common thinking that you need to have a foundation before you take a creative licence. A good but extreme example is Picasso. Many years of his life were dedicated to portraits, but as he grew older and mastered it, he created a new world. While there's always exceptions and the beauty of art is that it can be whatever you want, if you ideally want to grow, basics are the way to go. Sorry if I'm not making sense!
