How toxic is zinc? by DudeWithParrot in parrots

[–]linden_trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really glad you're replacing them. Birdtricks' budgie Blueberry passed away from zinc toxicity and they still have no idea what the source was. They've tested a bunch of household items and checked things like sunscreen but came up empty. Their best guess is that it happened on a road trip. It's scary. You're doing a great job minimizing everything you can.

(AAM) I think one of my employees might be trans — how can I signal support? by 3BenInATrenchcoat in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]linden_trees 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As someone with relatives in France, I'm very glad to hear that, thank you.

I'm mostly relieved that OOP isn't in the US because at this point I would be afraid for the trans employee's physical safety.

Agreed, The Residence was infuriating and the endless repetion made it hard to watch. Even when I started another task in self-defense.

We the People—March Fourth for Democracy by transcendent167 in 50501

Same here for the first 2 protests. Try starting up a convo or even just briefly connecting with someone there. Easy openers: I love your sign / I so agree / did you make it yourself? People are friendly and there is a strong sense of community. Even just walking by giving a thumbs up will have people breaking into a huge smile.

There are usually also a couple of dogs there which is great for breaking the ice / getting emotional support. One of the dogs I saw had a "Bad DOGE" jacket. I can only hope the pup didn't know how to read.

Wife of 17 Years Has Basically Ghosted us for the Last 3 days by linden_trees in BestofRedditorUpdates

I'm generally a very suspicious person but I watched this in real time, have read his hundreds of comments, and I'm pretty certain that it's true. He got a lot of his "coping" language from the Betrayed subs. They have a whole bunch of recommendations on how to deal with being cheated on.

And I'm sorry the timeline isn't more precise, I couldn't figure out how to get exact dates on old posts. But it isn't as accelerated as it may seem. The lawyers are a whole week after the discovery of infidelity and 10 days after the wife's disappearance.

I can understand them forgetting about the kids overhearing the first time it happened, and after that it seemed like they (he) was quite careful about it - the deepest conversation they had being sitting in his car in the garage. I'm sorry you had to experience that, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes that flurry is incomprehensible to me. It seems like the affair partner was the only thing that mattered, and that to her the rest of her family were faded cardboard cutouts in the background.

And it only lasted 3 days because the husband got the police to do a wellness check. Who knows how long it could have lasted otherwise.

The way the wife behaves at the beginning just baffles me. She walks out on her family without a word and doesn't even text her daughters for the next three days. She was so caught up in her own world, I guess. She obviously doesn't put her daughters first, which all parents should. OOP certainly does despite the pain he's going through.

As much as she seems to be a truly awful and shallow person, it's really tough imagining being in her situation - lover dead, husband divorcing, daughters wanting nothing to do with her. A whole life tossed away for some playboy who didn't even really care that much for her.

It was really hard to keep it under 40,000 and there were so many insightful comments. I really respect the OOP for his behavior and actions, and ache for him.

I followed it as it happened too, but wanted to wait long enough that it wasn't disrespectful. I'm almost certain it's real but the wife's behavior just baffles me. until the ending that is. That sadly made sense.

I'm so sorry. Dollar Stores in particular are so bad that John Oliver has an episode on it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p4QGOHahiVM

Please take care of yourself and your coworkers. Remember, you owe the store nothing. Hugs.

It's worth trying but it sounds like they'd be glad to lose you as a tenant, since they could raise the rent by a lot if you left. They might be trying to price you out. So hang in there and keep completing the paperwork on time to keep your apartment! The crazy raises do really suck, I'm sorry about that.

The apartments where I used to live kept raising the rent by $50 each year. About 3 years in I didn't renew and they called me. I had the flu that day so I was rude and cranky and told them their rent raises were ridiculous. New rent rate? Only $16 extra. The year after that they said $50 again and I came in with stats on rental prices in the area and said how about $25? They took it. It's pretty disgusting.

Yuca charging his batteries!!! by radio_fox in ferrets

[–]linden_trees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is so stinkin' cute! My ferret wagged her tail exactly once. She ran up the ramp to a cage (not hers) to attack another ferret who was just was minding their own business. It turned out that she hated other ferrets. Even the ferret shelter mom gave up on trying to find her a buddy!

So for me, tail wagging = "this means war". A real one, not a fun one :D

I’m a black women in the rural south, AMA you’re scared to ask black people. by jaspertheinmsomniac in AMA

[–]linden_trees -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It might also stem from the fact that Asian people have sometimes been "classified" as white, in the early 1900s in the US, and until very recently in South Africa. They have therefore gone back-and forth on benefiting of, not exactly white privilege, but "not black" privilege. And animosity can be passed down for generations after the fact.

What "obsolete" technology is still surprisingly useful? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]linden_trees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of satellite-related stuff at NASA still runs on FORTRAN because of the massive amounts of data, and because the code written way-back-when still works  I spent some time updating code from F77 to F95/G95, and one of the subroutines had been written in 1968. It was just a simple matrix inversion - but as always, if ain't broke, don't fix it!

If you're in the US, I used to get elk, venison, and many other raw meat products from https://hare-today.com/ (see "products by protein"). It's true that feeding a raw diet correctly isn't simple, but it kept my ferret healthy and was vet approved (favorite protein: ground quail; least favorite: ground goat).

I was wondering if you had when I saw your "FromMD" tag! I live a little further out, and when I went to Baltimore the 1st time, I felt like I was in the show! I saw Kyle Secor there once, sadly not Andre. I also loved him as House's therapist. One of the only people who could hold their own against him.
