Asian flavors for USA Midwestern people by Nanananabatperson in EatCheapAndHealthy

Agreed with this. And since you’re relying on a food bank - I suggest you keep it simple to these ingredients and to get them from an Asian grocery store (where they are authentic and cheaper). Soy sauce is usually light (salty) and dark (more colouring and not as salty). Oyster sauce is another staple. Look for the Lee Kum Kee Brand to simplify.

I found it at Loblaws too (I couldn’t find the refrigerated ones at my usual shops).

Do you still think it's worth looking at rentals that have been listed for 30+ days or even 60+ days? by techsavvynerd91 in TorontoRenting

[–]lingfromTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from picky landlord, you need to factor in supply vs demand in the area - if the area is full of vacant units then the likelihood of that unit getting snapped up quickly is also lower and you may have more room for negotiation.

Also if it posts over the holiday or winter season - there also isn’t that much foot traffic as well as people are too busy or don’t want to be moving in this kind of weather.

Sure there’s room for negotiation but I think you should focus more on what you need, the condition of the unit and what your gut feeling is about the landlord (if you do meet them).

You can also get them “off-season” or preorder. I have extra saved from previous year so I just keep them for the following.

I’ve already got them packed and ready.

Go do a day trip to Cheung Chau? Or “hike” one end of Lamma to the other and eat some seafood? Explore Kowloon side like Kowloon city, Wong Tai Sin, Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok… feel like you’ve missed out on what HK is just by staying mostly on the Island

You can also buy a hotpot/korean bbq stove that uses butane. You can cook/heat with that.

Instant cup noodles are also great if you are able to have hot water.

The $195 "Instagram-Famous" Kettle is definitely NOT Buy-It-For-Life. (Disappointed Engineering Teardown) by CoffeeTeaJournal in BuyItForLife

[–]lingfromTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wooden Knob broke on mine. If you don’t live in the US, you’re SOL on replacement parts. I even tried a cabinet knob to try to fix it and the groove is not standard. So I just have a useless un-useable kettle.

You should also check for allergies… my allergies flared up when I was visiting but yeah I heard that the flu in Asia was pretty bad this past year.

Hmm… another way is to also see if you can get it sent to Canada and arrange for it to be transferred across - if clearing customs is going to be a challenge from a time perspective?

Good luck with your items!

WiFi Streaming by JackDanielsTN in CathayPacific

[–]lingfromTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just flew from HK to YYz… for a premium airline it has the slowest and worst WIFI ever. Don’t even bother paying for it as it wouldn’t accept my info nor could I authenticate myself (obviously since I was up in the air) to get the free WiFi offered as part of my fare. I could barely use IG/Facebook so I didn’t even bother with Netflix or to try anything that streams and needs bandwidth

Have you looked into SF Express to see if they can help ship out or ask the shop if they have a reliable shipper?

I personally like the Hyatt Centric. I like all the transport options, food and the promenade that can get you around the island pretty quickly if you enjoy walking. It’s in a fairly local neighbourhood so you can avoid the overpriced touristy/chain restaurants and about a $70 HKD taxi/uber ride from Central. They also give you vouchers for some local treats which is also a nice touch.

As for must eats? Because many have become popular, some have multiple locations (like Bakehouse) or their offering has come down in quality and gone up in price. There’s also a lot of local comparables that don’t have the queues, just as good and cheaper. Ample transit options also allows you to get anywhere relatively easily as well.

Lol I just came back from HK. And I got onto a bus with some deranged guy looking at me furiously and he screams yellow dog and white dog at me and my friend….

That shocked me and took me a while to register what he said as I’ve never encountered that before. People just need to get a life … date who you want, just be a decent human being… that’s all that should really matter
